:bounce:Alrighty then....:bouncep:

It seems that as the leaves on the trees start to change with the season so are people cars for autocrossing.

So I thought I would start a thread to see what people are planning to bring out to the next event or next year.  I will start out since you have seen my new toy.

1969 VW Karmann-Ghia in E/Prepared.

-- 1776cc or 1820cc motor (still looking...)
-- adjustable shocks (done)
-- lowered (done)
-- race tires (waiting)
-- Corbeau driver's seat (done)
-- removed interior (done)
-- EMPI semi-racing street exhaust (done)
-- probably some other stuff I don't even know about.

2006 will be the 50th anniversary of the Karmann-Ghia's introduction to North America, so I hope to celebrate it with some thundering outings in the little orange rustcan that could.

Don't fret, Al... I know your egg went to a great home Wink

Now as for me, I have a decision to make...

Old: '90 BMW 325is STX/DSP & borrowed '91 911 Turbo ASP

New: '95-'98 M3, '03-'04 WRX, or leased '06 Cooper S

I'm basically looking for a triple duty car... commuting, track days occasionally, and autocrosses regularly.  Classing and outright speed are secondary to finding something that is really fun to drive.  And I will keep my old Grand Cherokee for all season people & stuff hauling.

Any suggestions? Cheesy

Thanks,

Jon

WRX is going to be the most versatile and I would think fun.  You could probably find an STi for low 20's. (we saw a couple when we were looking).

The BMWs seem to shed parts on the course a bit too frequently for me.  Which can be expensive if it is a driving light that shatters.

The Mini will most likely head to Dstock next year.  The Base cooper I drove on race tires was too much like a go cart for my taste.

Just my opinion.  Your mileage may vary.

Excellent summary on all counts, thank you Cheesy

STi is more car than I'm looking for (with higher insurance than I feel like paying also.)  Ditto for a used Evo 8.  I'm hoping to spend around $18k.

WRX would indeed be very versatile but I don't need 4 doors or AWD for any other reason (I'm keeping the Jeep around for those duties.)  I also don't particularly love the look or sound of them.

Cooper S is out of my price range unless I lease it, in which case I can't modify it very much.  And I'm not so sure about the long-term reliability with purchasing a slightly used one in my price range.  And I'm not a huge fan of FWD.  But I consider "kartlike" to be a very good thing. Smiley

E36 M3 will require the most maintenance and potentially the highest costs on top of a payment.  But I can't think of a better car in that price range for "triple duty."  Plus, I've wanted one since they came out.

Maybe a strong running 100k+ mile '95 M3 for around $12k is the answer, and keep the dollar difference around to pay for the long list of "minor" things I'm sure it will need... Real suspension, light wheels, sticky tires, real brakes, rollbar, harnesses, seats, intake, full exhaust, ECU, etc Wink

Thanks again,

Jon

Current:  '90 ES Miata
Next Year:  '90 ES Miata (although I've been seriously considering ST2 - the 710's are just too much fun).

It appears the Mazdaspeed MX5 is classified in B Stock per the listing on scca.com:

http://www.scca.com/_Filelibrary/File/stockcategoryclassificationsbymake.pdf

I didn't see where the new MX5, Solstice or Sky were classified as of yet. I looked at the Fastrack's back to around May of this year.  I may have missed it though.

Here's the link to the Fastrack with the classing changes:

http://www.scca.org/_FileLibrary/File/05-08-fastrack.pdf

The Mazdaspeed is being moved from B Stock to C Stock.  The new models are being placed in C Stock.  The more the merrier.

Cool.  Thanks for the update.  Told you I may have missed it!

Great, now that I've got a new car to get used to they throw some stiff competition in to boot.  Oh well, like you said, the more the merrier!

The November Fastrack just came out this week (finally) with the new D/E Mod class rules and the latest on stock classes.  Prepared class people need to read this too.

Vega restoration/resurrection begins. Potential F/SP, or oddball STS car. Maybe I'll buy another motorcycle. Still thinking about a tractor. Perhaps a set of Hoosiers for the Hyundai? So much stuff, so little time.

How about the Vega with a little more motor in SM2?   I suggest the new Z06 (427) small block.  A B&M or Hughes manual shift Powerglide with a 3000 stall speed converter and a good quality Posi rear.  Maybe a set of slicks for an occasional visit to E/Mod.
Always ready to spend your money,
