Yea there are some videos out of cars on track with the new pavement. Looks a little safer and a little faster.

cant wait to drive it!

Gunny
I watched an interesting video of Mike Skeen in an M3 the other day on the full course. It seems that at some "new" corners, there is asphalt past the apron, and Skeen was using every bit of it, so the apron was well under the car!

So far I'm not finding that the new pavement has changed much how I get around the track.
It has however removed various marks that I (consciously and/or unconsciously) used as references.

That's probably a good thing - maybe now I'll look ahead of where I'm going and quit going from
point to point.   Smiley

I heard both green and blue groups are waitlisted for May.

However there is still room in the "Intro to DE" class - which is a great option too.

For only $50 you get an hour of classroom instruction followed by a full half hour session on the track with an instructor.  It's held midday on Saturday so most folks could make it a day trip.  It's a great way to get a taste of what these events are like without a lot of time, money, or risk invested.

There is, of course, the risk you will want to come back and do another.  And another.  Grin

After my first HPDE the only thing I can say is that I recommend to anyone! I had a lot of fun (chasing Porsches was one of the best parts). Also I was impressed with how smoothly the event went. If you can spend the money, do it!
Here is the video of the Sunday morning run (it's a really boring video).
http://youtu.be/ixryef7lOgo
I drove in the rain later Sunday and almost spun a couple times but don't have the video. Driving in the rain was one of the best parts of the weekend.

Two days on track not enough for you?

Sign up for a full-day Ariel Atom "Driving Experience" on Thursday May 15, the day before the First Settlers Instructor clinic:
http://arielatom.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=59&Itemid=114

If you aren't involved in the Instructors clinic then you'll have to entertain yourself on Friday.
(VIR offers other activities including karting.  http://virnow.com/karting/ )

EDIT:  Duh, I just read the rest of the page - they also offer their half-day Experience on Friday May 16.  That fits even better with the schedule.

I did the 1/2 day Ariel Atom Driving Experience 2 years ago and it was a blast. It's on the smaller 1.1 mile Patriot course but I didn't have any trouble going as fast as I was comfortable with! Basically, you follow an instructor around the track. He goes as fast as the slowest driver in your group so if you take a few of your race buddies with you you're pretty much assured to get to go as fast as you'd like!

If you attended the Zone 2 PCA DE in March, don't forget to check out the F&S Enterprises
website.  They were taking pictures all weekend, if you were on the track then there will be
pics of your car.

Here's the link to the gallery for that event:
http://store.fandsenterprises.com/index.php?do=photocart&viewGallery=13165

Click on any categories you might be in; e.g. your run group, charity laps, or misc paddock
photos.  (Don't forget other run groups, if you ran in more than one.)

I usually select the ones I like as "favorites", then do a separate pass to filter just the
favorites, and finally click on "order same product of all your favorites" to have them
make a CD for me.

There are still slots left in the afternoon session on Friday May 16.  I think I'll sign up.
Should be a good way to get my brain prepped for the rest of the weekend.   Smiley

Documents have been posted for the May DE event.  If you are registered then
you should have received an email today with links to them.

If you have harnesses installed in your car, make sure you read the section on
harness rules - they've been updated this year.

Nice.  I put my brakes on today, but couldn't bed them because it was raining.  Carbotech XP10s up front and Hawk HP+ rears.  Finally got some blank rotors, too.  The drilled rotors I was running had numerous cracks through them.

What do you need brakes for? You planning to slow down and let a few of the Porsches catch up to you???

Well, it was a good event.  Good weather and good company.  I didn't expect to get 5 sessions on Friday, so that was a plus.  I ended up running my fastest time on VIR Full (2:14.3) during my last session Sunday.  I'm very pleased.  My front brakes are completely gone.  I may try using the same Carbotech endurance compound that we use on the Miata next time.

Here is a link to the video of my last session, starting with my fastest lap.

I'll echo what Justin said. Awesome time at VIR and a first for the merkur which didn't fair as well as Justin but held its own against the more powerful cars on track. Something I wanted to share was this video from 1998 at the start of the VIR reconstruction. It really puts things into perspective and how lucky we are to have this track close by.

Great video!  I think I saw it a couple of years ago but neat to see it again now, when I know the track so much better.  I wonder if someone could make a similar video today and then show them side by side.

Also do check out the website http://virhistory.com/vir.html - it has a lot of cool stuff like that video.

Love little factoids like this one:

Quote
Ed Welch, George Arnold and I took them up to the farm and drove through the grass to show them where the track should go. Dick Snyder was there with his Mercedes 300SL and we used the turning radius of his car to mark the radius of the horseshoe turn at the end of the front straight. The turning radius of the Strickland brothers' road grader was used to set the radius of Oak Tree turn.

Hey sorry for the long delay!
I was figuring out how to add the data to the video and work took alot of my time.
Anyhow here is my first solo session of the weekend (all 30 minutes worth). It was my 2nd session on Sunday.
My instructor signed me off for Blue but he had a little test for me to pass (which I didn't know about)
anyhow my fastest two lap start at 12:12 in the video. But you gotta watch the first few lap for my test!.

There is some cool footage of me passing the hapless Porsche's, BMW's, and Corvettes. What a blast.

BTW track photos are now up on the F&S Enterprises website.
http://store.fandsenterprises.com/index.php?category=40

Be sure to check out all the sessions you ran in.  (I saw some nice ones of
the Merkur in Saturday Blue.)

The photos can be useful for other reasons.  For example, I finally figured out
there were *two* blue 996 Cabs with hardtops in Blue.  One of them was the
car that held a bunch of us up for two whole laps before finally giving some
point bys.  The other is a nice guy in the club with a C4S who is pretty fast
and I should have let him by me sooner - but I thought he was the first guy
and I didn't want to get stuck behind that car again!

NOTE:  The photos from the Zone 2 PCA DE in March will expire on June 13, so if you
haven't already looked through that gallery you should do it soon.

In case anyone is interested, registration for the fall First Settlers DE has just opened.

Two days on the South course followed by a day on the Full course.  One of my favorite
events of the year.
