As many of you know, my son, Dave, and I run a 2001 Z28 in ESP at SCCA national events. ESP has been having a resurgence lately, with 34 cars at Nationals in September. It is a pony car class except for the AWD turbos like WRXs, Eclipses, and Eagle Talons. The AWD turbo cars have an advantage, particularly in Pro Solo. A WRX also won Solo Nationals this year by .6 seconds over the multi-time defending National Champ.

The SCCA has just proposed moving the AWD turbos out of ESP and putting them in ASP with other AWD turbos. I would really appreciate it if those of you who are SCCA members would write to the SCCA in support of this proposed rule change.  Something simple, like

I am writing in favor of removing the AWD Turbo cars from ESP. I agree that they are not a good fit and this will promote a healthy, fun ponycar class in the future. I fully support this proposal going through.

You send the letter by going to http://crbscca.com/?page=submitLetter.

Thanks for your help.

Here is the wording of the proposed rule change.

Delete the following lines in ESP:
Eagle Talon Turbo (all) (1989-99)
Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo (1989-99)
Subaru Impreza WRX (non-STI) (2002-07)

Add the following listing in ASP:
Eagle and Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo and Talon Turbo (1989-99)

And change the following line in ASP:
Subaru Impreza WRX STI (2004-07)
to
Subaru Impreza WRX all incl. STI (2004-07)

Comment: The SPAC feels that these AWD turbo cars in ESP are not a good fit. ESP has shown strong growth, nearly all of which has been fueled by ponycars. Also, the STIs in ASP may be a more attractive option with the additional UD/BD.

I'll send them a letter. I remember when Richard West found the loophole that allowed his Subaru wagon to run in H/S. AWD, more HP than the older F/S Pony cars, and plenty of aftermarket support. Not to mention Richard can drive his tail off, but that car, (at that time), did not belong in H/S. Once the Mini's came to H, it was all over for my Vega, but even they weren't as fast, (at least the ones I ran against), as that damn Subaru.

Thanks, Bill. Are we going to see the Vega next season?

I sure hope so. This year was a complete bust for me. If it does return, it'll be in F/SP, since I saved almost all of the suspension parts I had on it in the 70's and 80's. It won't be real fast, but it will be fun.

Do you need to be a SCCA member to send the letter? There is a space asking for the SCCA member #.

Yes. You do have to be an SCCA member.
