I just bought a 04 Miata a few months ago and brought it out to the AutoX this last Sat. I'm somewhat familiar with the VMSC classing (SCCA rules), but I'm having a tough time finding any rules about what modifications can be done on a car to be considered for a this class or that class.

In a nut shell, I'm trying to run in stock class, but I would like to know what things I'm allowed to modify while staying in the same class (i.e. tire compound, size, minor engine stuff, etc.). I would also like to learn about rulings for other classes as well. I would like to add a oil cooler, and a aftermarket driver's seat eventually.

Thanks!

You may be beyond this now, but I like to start with our EZ classing chart
and then go to the SCCA rules from there as needed.

If you hover your mouse at the top of the web page over Home, it brings up a menu
where you can select Upload/Download Files.  That takes you to a page which takes
you to a page where you can download "2012 Classing - Easy Chart".

One of these days we will make it easier to get to those download files.....

If you want to stay in stock (street next year), you will not be able to change the seat or add the oil cooler. Looks like the engine mods section is page 78-79 for stock. I couldn't find any allowance for the oil cooler, and if it is not specifically allowed, it is not allowed. Good thing for your car for next year is it is possibly moving from CS to ES, per the proposed street class listings.

Can I ask why a aftermarket oil cooler? We ran no oil cooler (not even stock one) on our racing miata for endurance racing with no issues? We are adding one eventually but I can't see why a street car would ever need one unless things like Forced Induction was added. Remember cool oil can be just as bad as overly hot oil to an engine, it needs heat to work.

Just a FYI

Thanks so much for the info! Shame about the seat though, we'll see how things shape up next year before I settle in on any modifications.

Note: Any modifications I may wish to do to my car are not necessarily for enhancing the car for AutoX, or other tack events, but are for my own purposes. Your knowledge and experience is welcome, noted, and appreciated. Thanks!

I would just do whatever you want to with it and run it in the modified or prepared class. I think CSP should. Allow you to do most the stuff you want. There's enough room in that class fo easily brank the bank with cool mods.
