For those of you that have not heard of this, it is a 24 hours race of $500 beaters. I've been wanting to get a team together for the last few years, but have not. I'd like to try to get a VMSC entry for 2009. Anyone interested? Hopefully the 2009 schedule will be out soon.

We will need to build a car and have 4-6 eligible drivers. Each driver will need to be willing to contribute towards the entry, which is $500 per car, $100 per driver. So probably about $200-$300 each. But think of how much fun this would be for a weekend on track! Rules are available here:

http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/rules/

Post here if you'd be interested in being part of this. Last year the closest one was in South Carolina in July. We could probably camp on site to save money.

Oh yeah, we would need to find a suitable <$500 car. I'd like everyone to be a part of the build in some way, but I am willing to buy the car if necessary...LOL.

I created a quick MySpace page and will update as things come together. Add as a friend if you are on there!

This is something I've wanted to be involved with for at least a year.  I was offered a spot on a team back in the Spring but had to turn it down, and we were toying with the idea of a work-team before my job went south, but I would LOVE to be a part of a VMSC effort.

Unfortunately the timing couldn't be worse for me, but I really hope there are enough other VMSC folks who would like to get involved with this.  I would really like to think this is something we can do and repeat.  It would bring publicity to the club, too.

Thanks Tony. We may take you up on this...LOL. Keep in mind, the car will need a cage and have all glass other than the windshield removed.

I'm hoping Scott W., Ben, and the rest of maniacal can get into this as well. I'll try to keep this at the top until next year to see who else may want to be part of the action.

Is the schedule for 2009 up yet? Depending on when in July, I may want in.

I would love to be part of the team.  Does selling parts from a car give you credits towards the price (edit - oooo, I just read the rules...it does!)?

http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/858930355.html - this would be good if we could put some tires on it...oh, and fix the timing belt

I also know that Keath recently got Glenn's old Civic for free and wants to turn it into a car for Hillclimbs.  That could be ideal since it needs a cage anyways...Keath, what do you say?

This could be fun. Glen's Civic would be perfect!!!! Can't guarantee it'd make it back in 1 piece though. Wink

We'd need a couple sets of 200 treadwear tires too. What is a fast tire with that treadwear? This could be fun. I'll update the thread when they post the schedules for next year.

That wouldn't be a bad one either. We could sell off the interior if it is nice to recoup money.

We can sell seats, carpet, AC parts, misc electrics, interior trim, exterior trim, glass, lights, body panels (at least trade them for someone else's beat up one plus some cash)...

The more I read about this, the less I would plan on bringing the car back from the race (Tony - does your offer still stand?).  It sounds like a ton of fun.  A cage, harness and tires are probably going to be the largest expenses on top of the car.  I would err on the side of safety and go a little overkill with the cage.

Actually, here is a very good driver at the South Carolina (Carolina Motorsports Park) event from this year. Looks fun!!!

I have a spare 6-pt harness that I could lend, along with a spare seat.

Sweet. As a club, I think we can make this happen quite effectively if everyone lends a hand.

Thanks so far to Adrian and Tony for the offers! Smiley

Keath....you able to assist with graphics?

Once the schedule is posted, I'll move forward with the car purchase/prep. Hopefully they will have another east coast event. If not this may all be for naught.

yes my offer still stands. This is the last year i plan on keeping up with the inspection. (expires in december). After this the car was going to be a throw away and or stripped down for a few autox.  I can keep it around sitting in the yard (starting and moving it every now and then).

So if it happens not to come back from the race. (brought by another driver) Im fine with that as well. um just make sure you have the tools to remove Adrian's seat.

Alright, assuming it is running well enough to go 24 hours, looks like the Fleming Motorsports/VMSC/Ahamos Volkswagen Jetta will be the choice for entry. Still assuming there will be an East coast event next year, a prebuilt cage is around $1k. What do local shops charge for U-Car and Grand Sport cages for Southside Speedway? Also we will need to gather up a couple more sets of 4 x 100mm wheels and suitable 190 or higher treadwear tires. We will need canisters for fuel, water etc... We will also need to find a suitable truck and trailer to haul everything down. We may want to get spares for break rotors, hubs, hoses, etc... Just putting everything out there so people can brainstorm. Worse comes to worst, I can rent a tow dolly from U-Haul and yank it down with the Grand Cherokee, although that would be a stretch.

We should try for 6 drivers and others for support/wrenching. Justin, Bill you guys have first dibs on the driver spots. I'm sure as this comes together, more people will know what there situation is. I think we can get a nice team together.

Hey, those Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs have a treadwear rating of 200  Wink

Cheap 15" 4x100 wheels should be easy to come by.  Steelies always work and are easy to repair, should one get bent.  I'll be happy to work on the car as well as drive.  The race should actually be ~13 hours.  check out the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_Hours_of_LeMons

I also have:  truck & trailer, 2 fuel jugs, plenty of tools, SFI racing suit, and a big winch to pull the wreckage back onto the trailer.

I'm going to be a stingy bastard right out of the gate, though:  If I'm available to go at all, I want to drive.  I'm really looking for some door-to-door experience, and frankly I'd rather do it for the first time in a $500 jalopy than my pretty orange toy.

No doubt. If you can go, you can drive. I'm hoping to do a little fund raiser to assist us all in the experience.

I was looking around for roll cage fabricators around Richmond and found Roll Cage Components, located in Powhatan.  They even have a specific page for a 24 Hours of LeMons cage: http://www.rollcagecomponents.com/kits7.htm

I wonder if they would be willing to sponsor us?  Let's see what the schedule for next year looks like and we can start planning in depth on what we need and how we can source it cheaply.

Sticky done.

Depending on the schedule, I might be up for it as well if you need more help.

Also being the Lazy bum that i am.  I've had my Eye on this little junker for a bit after i get rid of the Jetta. http://www.racingjunk.com/post/1347015/U-Car-89-Ford-Escort-GT.html  . Since it already has all the safety gear, cage seat and preped for the run. im sure we can get the car for 500.00 then pay the guy 600 or less for the safety gear.

That is essentially a prebuilt lemons car...LOL.

David, You're welcome to join us as well. I'm not sure if there is a cap on drivers, since each one pays an entry fee. I think 6-7 would be great.

I'm hoping we can scrounge some miata wheels and tires from a junkyard. most of them are quite light and 4 x 100. I think the VW and Mazda centerbore is the same as well. Anyone know?

Here is something we should all read:

Miata centerbore is 54.1mm, I think.

Unfortunately I just unloaded a set of Kosei K1's that would have been perfect.  Sad
