I'm on the east side of Richmond (Church Hill area). I'd like the garage to be within 20-30 minutes, if possible. So far I've been looking in Ashland, Chester, and Midlothian.
I did look at one around an hour away, and that was huge and cheap, but I think with an hour drive each way I wouldn't be likely to get much done on weekdays after work.

It does look like they haven't finalized the 2012 solo rules, they have a draft posted on the SCCA website though. All the suspension work is fine for STS, but I didn't see anything about the flywheel. That could put you in CSP (or SM) if it's not allowed. Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Oh well. Who needs PAX, anyway?

David,
Thanks for sharing! Were you able to get up close and personal with either the Subaru or Toyota FT-86? Any impressions? I've heard its a Miata with 4 seats, but I didn't know if the back seats were glorified shelves or actually useable. Haven't had a chance to sit in one yet.
My '99 Subaru Impreza is at 165K miles, and one of these is a very strong contender for the next DD. Can't wait to drive one.

So after a monumental push back in Ohio, I'm 100% out of the old house, and hopefully going to closing in less than a month. Once that's done, I'll be looking for a proper garage. I rented a small storage unit to put the Camaro and tires and stuff for now, but it's not really big enough to do any meaningful work. Any of you that may have been in the same situation, do you have any recommendations on where to rent a workshop for reasonable money? I've found some, but they're all commercial spaces, like for a business, and are priced appropriately ($1000+/month). Ideally I'd like to be under $500/month, and would like space for 4 vehicles, but I'm flexible on the details. Any suggestions? I will share space or invite everyone over to drink beer and stand around while I work on cars in payment for your wisdom .

General / Technical Help / Classing questions
|
on: January 25, 2012, 04:33:44 PM
|
Hi everyone! Sorry for the very newbie questions, but I haven't auto-x'd in a couple years, so my class definitions are way out of date. For reference, Street Touring was still STS and STS2 last time I ran. Are these the most up to date version of the rules?: http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/Documents/2011%20Tech/2011%20SCCA%20Solo%20Rules.pdfI'm intending to run my 1985 AW11 MR2. It has Tokico 5-way adjustable shocks, whiteline sway bars, a catback, and a lightweight flywheel. My understanding back then (I was in an E30 with similar mods, the MR2 is new) was all of these were allowed, even the flywheel, which surprised me, but it was explained that STS was originally set up to capture all the non-auto-x people and allow them to be competitive with 'typical' street car mods...aka ricer...no just kidding. Is that still the case? I know the '89 Civic SI is the car to have, but is my car even legal? Otherwise, I'm assuming its Street Mod, do not pass Go, do not collect $200. I have no idea of the weight or manufacturer of the flywheel, didn't know it was on there when I bought it, just that the clutch was gone, found it on the clutch replacement and was like, "Hmm...I thought this revved a little too freely, even for a 4AGE" Thanks for any help you can give!

General / Technical Help / Re: Thinking about body work
|

Oh I see - just replace all the body work with plastic, which never rusts. Brilliant! Exactly! On the rust repair, that wheel arch and the sill/fender on either side of the rear wheel is the most common spot I've seen. Have you had your carpet out yet? The rear trunk floor and interior floorboards are also common areas, and can be easy to check without full removal. For the rust primer, I know POR-15 is famous for that as well (POR literally stands for "Paint Over Rust"). I re-did the floors on a '91 Camaro convertible and the POR-15 worked really well from what I saw. It's still definitely worth wire-wheeling everything to get the rust off and back to bare metal. It'll fall apart eventually otherwise. Plus, you don't want to cone it and have the painted rust section break off (happened on my winter beater Miata).

Wow, bookmarked for the pictures alone! That's very nice! Although I think it's out of my price range (from the ad): "BEFORE YOU ASK ABOUT BUYING THIS CAR Please note that this car is a part of the owner's Personal Collection. It is not listed here for the purposes of selling it, so please don't call or email asking for a sale price. However, if you really do want to buy this car, feel free to make an offer. Do realize that this car was purchased as an investment and an addition to a collection. So, it will likely take a sizeable offer to pry it away from this collector. If you are seriously interested in a car like this one and have some patience, Midlife Classics can work with you to obtain and restore a car like this to your personal specifications." I'm selling a house in Ohio, not Nova, we're lucky to break even out there .

Isn't there a rule for new marques... I believe board members have to take a few jo- I mean test drives in the car first to, uh, officially approve it for club events. My house in Ohio is finally in contract, once I'm free of that commitment I'm going to be in the unique position of (some, not alot) money, no better half to say no, and LOTS of unique project cars cheap. TVR to an auto-x?

Thanks for the info everyone! Looking forward to competing this year.
Also, I notice there is no TVR marque trophy. Hypothetically speaking, if I bought a decrepit 2500M for a couple grand and campaigned it for a season (plus added the $100, obviously), could that be rememdied?

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the very late notice, but I got an email from Jeff last night saying that tonight is the first opportunity to earn points towards trophies? Could one of you explain the system to a newbie? Do karting results go towards your overall standings? Last meeting (November?) we raced before and after the meeting...which time counts? I may be working at a friends shop until almost 8, and just wanted to know if I should duck out early for any racing before the meeting.
I'm officially a member now, and definitely want to get in on the fun! Thanks in advance!
Cliff

Merry Christmas! Thanks for the warm welcome. I've auto-xed the Vette a couple times, but haven't had it out on track yet since I still owe money on it. I've got about a year left to pay it off, so maybe this will be the year!. Usually its the MR2, with the Subaru as backup, for events. John, Thanks for the heads up, I'll definitely email the VP. Kinda on that note, is there a general sticky or "About Us" page that I could go to for more information? I didn't see anything other than the meeting times on the home page. Do you guys follow SCCA classing rules for cars? Hope everyone's having a good holiday!

Hi everyone! My name's Cliff, I'm fairly new to Richmond (moved here from Ohio over the summer). I was the random guy that showed up to the G-force event last month and raced with some of you. I'm excited to see an active car club in the area! I came out to spectate/work at the VMSC/BRR shootout, but didn't have any of my cars available to compete, hopefully I can get in on the action next year. I've done a few SCCA auto-x's, but mostly did trackdays with NASA out in the Midwest, and would like to continue doing both once the house there sells and I have some disposable income again. I'm not really partial to any make/model, but my current cars are a C5 Z06, GC8 2.5RS, '88 Iroc-Z28, AW11 MR2, and a '97 Ford Aerostar (one of these things is not like the others haha, this is my house/Home Depot trusty steed). I don't have many pictures of the vehicles, but here's a build thread I did on the MR2 last year if you're interested: http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/rring-an-85-mr2/30307/page1/Haven't really settled on the next project yet, it'll either be a GRM $20xx car, refreshing the '88 Camaro that's still stock after 10 years, or another Miata/E30. I've sold one of each within the past couple years, and miss them. Anyway, looking forward to meeting and racing with all of you in the next couple months!
