1  General / Autos and Autosport / Re: Old Dominion Sports Car Club on: October 29, 2016, 07:18:58 AM
As best I remember it wasn't in the Richmond area.  I first heard about VMSC in 1956 but didn't join until 1964. I'll ask around among other old coots from that era and see what I can find.  The following is only my conjecture: I think the ODSCC was a precursor club to Andiamo Motor Club in Newport News. I have an Andiamo dash plaque and the logo on it has a founding date of 1959.

A leg is like a run in an autocross except that in an autocross you get your best score but in a rally your score is the sum of all the legs.  Nomenclatures are these:  TSD means Time-Speed-Distance; Monte Carlo means that you know where a checkpoint is and what time you should be there; a picture leg means that you're given pictures of things to identify along the route; Gimmicks means look for lettering on tombstones, the color of things along the route, or whatever can be created to provide variety; Fastest through the forest means a closed course and you get your time through it (impractical in Virginia but fun to contemplate); Autocross component means you get your best time on an autocross course as part of your rally score; Prioritizing logic means logic questions like "Did you see a sign that said "Apple"?  If so go left, if not go right.

A style that I didn't propose is a Regularity Run. Here's how it's described:

Suggest about a 30 - 35 mile route as a "regularity run." Uncongested set of roads, completely easy to run course, contestants drive thru once at the speeds they choose. Then, maybe 2 hours later, they run the same course again, attempting to match their elapsed times from the 1st run. FCO at noon and 2 PM, end at some pizza place usually pleases as they usually have beer. Controls are hidden the 1st time thru the course, then visible the 2nd time thru. Its totally on the contestant - no one else to blame, for getting the best score at subsequent points.

OBTW, these are super-simple to put on, you don't even need accurate mileage measurments for elapsed time calculations. Only need to have checkpoints where you can hide the 1st time. Corn fields, big trees, etc. provide cover.
4  Events / Road Rally / Spring 2015 Rally Planning on: September 13, 2014, 07:41:51 AM
Rally planning for springtime 2015 continues. What to include? A leg of picture ID? A leg of TSD? A leg of Monte Carlo? A leg of gimmicks? A leg of fastest through the forest? A leg with an autocross component? A leg of prioritizing logic? Final leg ends at a winery? Final leg ends at a brewery? Final leg ends at Hardees? Share this please so that I can get responses from a good cross-section of people. Thanks for your help.

6  Events / Autocross / Re: Class of Vintage Cars on: April 29, 2014, 12:47:31 PM
Thanks for the help.  Betsy and I will be running a "grudge" match. She'll be running her Sunbeam and I'll run a TR4.  Betsy will have to be in Prepared but I know the contents of her engine: lightened Chevrolet rods and an aggressive camshaft plus a Weber 32/36 DGV.  I will be running my stock TR4.  The torque difference between the two engines will be significant in favor of the TR4, but we won't be competitive with modern vehicles due to refinements over the last 50 years.  Still, we're snarling at each other and anxious to see what happens.
7  Events / Autocross / Class of Vintage Cars on: April 18, 2014, 09:13:35 AM
I have a few sports cars more than 30 years old.  The SCCA rules point out that only cars produced within the last 30 years are eligible to run in Street class for National Events.  The cars would otherwise be classed as HS.  Does VMSC require that cars be <30 years old to run in a Street Class?

8  Events / Road Rally / New Alfa Computer on: April 10, 2012, 02:18:39 PM
Alfa has designed a new rally computer.  The full function computer is called the Elite and the new one seems to have some beneficial improvements.  We use a 2003 Elite and it's a sturdy product, but I encourage you to check out the latest version.  Need a link?  Try this: .

See you at the first checkpoint.

9  General / Open Forum / VMSC needs a home. Got $1,000? on: April 10, 2012, 02:03:39 PM
VMSC dates from 1950 having been formed by UVA students when sports cars were just becoming popular in the United States.  But its never had a home.  When I was a lad it met in the Branch House on Monument Avenue and I got accustomed to such impressive surroundings.  Meeting in a restaurant is so transitory.

How about buying a place?  If 1000 folks can come up with $1,000 we'd have a cool one million dollars.  Too unlikely?  Well, 100 folks with $1,000 would produce $100,000.  Wouldn't that procure a site for a home?  It'd be a start.

10  General / Open Forum / Re: Marian DeBardeleben - old trophies on: April 10, 2012, 01:53:23 PM
I knew Fred and Marian in those heady days.  What to do with the trophies of another era is a question that all of us have to consider.  Trophies are evidence of the achievements of those who have left them and sadly have little value to the next and future generations.

VMSC has no physical home and no place to display them.  But they don't memorialize the club.  They show the successes of those to whom they were awarded.  Nathan, I suggest you keep one or two and give the rest to those who would enjoy the pewter bowls, mugs, or plates.  Give them to an organization that can make them available at little or no cost to needy folks.

12  Events / Autocross / Record the drivers' meeting on Apr 30 at MEP on: April 29, 2011, 09:23:31 AM
Betsy and I would like the club's and the OD's permission to video a greeting from VMSC to the Carmarthen (Wales) Motor Club for their 100th birthday.  After recording/editing as necessary we'll burn it to a CD which we'll send to CMC for presentation at their banquet celebration in June, 2011.

A little history:  Betsy and I were the Course Opening Car for the 2007 Ferrari of North America Rally of the Virginias through 5 states.  The rally was developed by members of CMC and they worked the Special Stages.  We visited CMC in 2009 and worked their Quinton Stages Rally in Llandovery, Wales, UK.  We distributed VMSC pins and decals to the CMC members.

We propose to address the camera with....

Chuck & Betsy: "We're at an autocross of the Virginia Motor Sport Club in Caroline County, Virginia.  The members and guests of VMSC wish to offer our congratulations to the Carmarthen Motor Club on its 100th birthday."

Drivers' meeting participants: "Happy 100th birthday, Carmarthen!"
