Is VMSC hosting a booth this year?
27  General / Technical Help / Re: Classification Help on: March 05, 2010, 12:53:42 PM
The system is kind of funny/broken in what it rewards and what it punishes.  But competing systems generally fare no better.

DSP is custom-tailored for E30 325i's.  If they show up, my co-driver and I lose by multiple seconds.  But DSP is where Spec Miatas are placed.  A 45mm-restrictor-plate Miata running against JCW Mini Cooper S's, Mazdaspeed3's, and big Bavarian sedans?  But them's the breaks.

STX and SM are the wild west of Autocross.  You can always class higher, if you want:  the same rules for STX will allow you to run in Street Prepared, if you're crazy enough to want the penalty (and some people actually DO, if only for the chance of a class-win).

Thanks for organizing this, and for letting me jump in front.

Beware the raw fury of 106 wheezing hamsters!

Agreed:  I'm going for the 9am slot.  See you guys in the morning.
30  General / Autos and Autosport / Re: Dyno Day on: February 25, 2010, 10:11:49 AM
I'm waiting to hear back from Kevin @ PAS, but how long does it usually take to do 3 pulls?  I'm trying to decide whether to go for the 9am slot, or drop Alastair off for lunch and come closer to 1pm.

If you guys are all done by 1, that might be too late.  Oh the joys of single parenting...
31  General / Autos and Autosport / Re: Dyno Day on: February 22, 2010, 08:38:54 AM
How long do we have the dyno?  I might need to run either first or last depending on my boy and the time.
32  Events / Autocross / Re: Auto-X course based on G-force Karts track? on: February 22, 2010, 08:37:15 AM
Last year I downloaded a couple of guides on auto-x course design, and there are some issues that might make that course unsafe for competition.  That track has a couple of big descending radius turns, which supposedly are not very friendly to sedans (i.e., roll-over risk).

But I do love  the newly-redesigned track!  Never will I have to master that transition turn past the start/finish line that gave me so much trouble!
33  General / Open Forum / Re: What type of Racing Harnes are you using on: February 13, 2010, 12:26:08 PM
I went with TeamTech harnesses.  They offer significant padding under the harness, a sternum strap to keep the shoulder straps from separating, and a big pad under the cam-lock.  They now make 'em 3-2-3 to accommodate HANS devices, too.  A bit pricey, but much more comfortable than the older 2" 6-pt Willans.

Other nice features include pull-down tabs for tightening and pull-up tabs for loosening.  Sounds like a common enough "feature", but I've seen harnesses built opposite, and they're really hard to adjust once you're in the car.

I really wanted to do this last year.  And I really want to do it again this year!  Maybe this time I won't fink out!

2/20 theoretically works better for me.

iRacing is is way cool. I'm in a league where we all race on friday nights.
Oval racing in trucks. Man going is circles is tough.

No crap!  I've been in a couple of pro stock simulators, and it's really hard to enter turns!  Braking from half-way up the straight-away seems so very foreign.

River City Diner does have a separate room.

River City Diner
Parham by I-95.

The MINI club used to meet there pretty regularly.

Ooh, I forgot that I just got the motor mount for the MS3 in the mail today, and I put the intake on last weekend...  Too bad the R888's wont fit.  Smiley

Definitely not fun in a car with no windows, though.

What are your rates?

And quit looking at my welds!  Wink

I have a Logitech G25 mounted on a Playseats Evolution chair.  I run the setup through a PS2, a PS3, and a Media Center PC to my TV.  Haven't gotten into iRacing yet, mostly because of the subscription cost (I don't even have cable, so I get to gripe about even the cheapest subscriptions).
44  General / Classifieds / Re: 90 Miata Ready 2 Race on: September 30, 2009, 12:07:52 PM
I hope for the car's sake that you do have those numbers backward.  I would expect a novice to turn laps in the mid to upper 2:30's.  3:00+ is the kind of laps you see at a Member Driving Day in Touring Lights, which is kind of why I asked.

It's undoubtedly a great car, and I wish you well in your efforts to sell it, but here lately podium-finishing national champion Spec Miatas have been selling for around $8K.  You might want to check how long some of the listings on specmiata.com have been posted...

3:25 around VIR?  What track configuration?
46  General / Autos and Autosport / Re: Hoosier a6 tires on the way! on: August 13, 2009, 06:19:01 PM
I would strongly caution against putting one slick on the road.  If you have to panic stop, and it's a front tire, that tire will have FAR more trip than the other, and may yank the wheel out of your hand.  Conversely, if you get on it, and it's on the rear, who knows which way you're gonna go.

Put two on, if not all 4, and both at the same end of the car.

One of the single biggest differences that you can make to a car without changing your class is adding race rubber.  It's harder to control at the limit, but the limits are much higher.  Comparable cars with comparable drivers will be separated by several seconds simply by putting the right size and compound race tires under the arches.  PAX obfuscates this detail, which is why we run Street vs Open tire classes.

But yes, the formula changes yearly, and there are people who compete at a national level who spend countless hours every year researching which car to drive for just that year to gain a competitive edge with the current PAX modifiers.

If it were within my budget, you'd best believe I'd strap some race rubber on to my new Mazdaspeed 3 and take serious advantage of the current PAX snafu that allows DS to have a far better modifier than GS.
