Ha, yeah. That was the last time it was driven too!

Sat in a garage for several years, got a cage, then sat again. 2 weeks ago, with the help of Justin and Jeff, I turned up the effort and we were able to get it on track just in time.

Thanks again Mindy, Justin, Jeff & Audie for the amazing Hyperfest experience.

Car started coming together just a few weeks before the event and wasn't finished until the night before the first track outing. Here are two videos of it actually going quite well on track for the first time out. More photos coming I hope. It will be out at autocross sometime during the year to get it a bit more sorted.

Anyone know where the last two autocross photographers are? I see them at the event taking photos.
33  General / Autos and Autosport / Re: Street Touring brake cooling? on: May 06, 2016, 07:13:37 PM
Locally you wont have an issue, at least not from me on this particular instance.

Is the lower grill have mesh in front or is it solid and you must cut it to get any airflow?

34  General Category / Ask the Competition Committee / Re: Opinions on running by class on: April 28, 2016, 09:32:57 AM
I like running by class and it worked well for us at the first event. At the last event we ran the last heat and there were only a few cars and so we were basically hot lapping with two drivers. We gave up our last two runs because there was no opportunity to cool the car. There should always be a minimum of five minutes between runs per the rules. Consideration needs to be given to heat size relative to the number of two driver cars.

Agreed, Just because we can run through the heat faster doesn't mean we need too. We will make that point clear next time. If heat 1 took 1.5 hours with 25 drivers, then heat 4 should be able to take 1.5 hours with 12 drivers. No need to burn up cars or tires because you are in a smaller heat.

Thanks for the info. Is there anyway to view the current point standings, or is that kept offline?

Offline and announced at our year end awards banquet.

1 of the STX classed cars (white 325i) should be classed SM. I do not know the name but the car was turbocharged. I can help identify it in a line up.

See if that helps.
39  General Category / Ask the Competition Committee / 2015 vs 2016 PAX comparison on: March 16, 2016, 06:29:52 PM
I thought everyone would like to see this. It is a comparison I made between last years 2015 PAX and this years 2016 PAX.

The last column is the time, in seconds, you must drive faster(red) or slower(green) in 2016 to match the PAX time of 2015 assuming it takes you 60 seconds to get around a theoretical course.

42  General / Open Forum / Re: FarmBoy Fab: Mindy's Merkur, I title "Progression to RWD" on: March 06, 2016, 10:35:35 AM

Its been awhile and the car has gone through some small changes over the winter.

Where we left off last July was a blown motor. After that I threw together the 6.0 truck swap, did some house work and drove a combination of Jeff's civic, Gunny's vette and James si. It was really nice to have folks in the club that trusted me enough to drive there cars. THANKS AGAIN GUYS!!!

Some time in december I finally had a bit of time to turn back to the merkur. I drove to PA with Mindy and picked up a "0 mile freshly rebuilt motor" from some guy that needed money. Got it back to Goochland and a few months later with Jeff's help one night made the swap. Long story short the motor made NO OIL PRESSURE. I was a little pissed and took the next 2 months trying to figure out why. Finally I just pulled the again in February and this is what I found. I don't know how to resize the photos.

Installed the first time

Intercooler set-up. Made new piping and end tanks to the intercooler. It was a tight fit.

Removing the 2nd time

Brand new bearings already worn

Bearing clearances.... ~3/32"... support to be .0008" - .0026". No wonder it didn't have oil pressure.

Then I found out the bearing caps weren't from the same motor. There all of the tolerances where screwed up.

Here is a list of things I found where wrong.

Crank was cut .030 under
Miss matched bearings sets used (aftermarket and ford of all different sizes)
Crankshaft wasn't from a 2.3 turbo motor
Rear main cap from another motor

Free motor from Don Haulsee. Thanks DON!

Cleaning with engine degreaser and carb cleaner

Cleaned up

Cleaning pistons

Painted with engine paint

Till next time.

Don, sorry to hear that. Next year we will have to compare 2.3's on the dyno.

44  General Category / Ask the Competition Committee / Re: Older tires and classing STS vs CSP on: March 01, 2016, 07:45:08 PM
Thanks for posting this Mike as it is a common question.

Short answer is we will require you to run tires at 200 treadwear in ST, no matter what the actual compond construction is.

2 options:

Run something you have or can buy in 200+ flavor thats available quickly.

Run the next class up, the prepared class, for the first event and take the PAX hit. For points we drop the lowest ~2 events so it wont effect your ST trophy.

Thanks Mike.

Looks like they have crank polishing specified on their site.
46  General / Open Forum / Machine shop near Richmond, need to polish a crank on: February 13, 2016, 07:02:21 PM
Anyone know of a quality machine shop in the area that can polish a 4 cylinder crankshaft? I believe Ive found the root cause to low oil pressure in the merkur.

Welcome to the forums!

I've posed the question to our committee, we should be able to get back to you this week. Could you please give us the year and trim level of the car, just to be 100% certain we are on the same page.

Thanks and talk to you soon.
49  General / Technical Help / Re: Does anyone have a bore camera I can borrow? on: December 26, 2015, 11:49:34 AM
Just to close the loop on this. Bought the cable, taped it to a piece of tig wire I was able to snap a few photos of the tag on the under side of the oil pump.

This thing is super useful. It said it was water proof and it is. However I dunked it in oil and it kinda spotted the lenses permenatly however I still highly recommend these if your in the market. It fits down inside of the sparkplug hole with ease. I checked out all my cross hatching that way.

Good news is that I have the correct pil pump, so no need to pull the motor again... at least not for this.

Thanks Beth!

Justin, those are pretty amazing. Going to order one tonight. So many uses at that length.
