26  General / Open Forum / Racing Seat or Coil Overs on: June 13, 2017, 12:49:07 PM
For most you know me and my car.
I've been doing some more track time this year and I'm starting to get the hang of live above 100mph.
anyhow just a quick question.
Starting the slippery slope of replacing/upgrading some things.

So after talking with some folks at Summit Point I've come up with two things I would like to upgrade relatively soon.

Racing seats and harness
or
Coil Overs

Which one should I do first?

for you instructors out there I would like to get your take and anybody else for that matter.

thanks,
looking forward to some good insight.

Are there a provisions in club or SCCA rules for separating a tie?  There has to be something more than alphabetical order, really.  Perhaps consider the second fastest time as the deciding factor.  It's totally unbiased and should work every time (like this happens every weekend).  Honestly, who'd a thought...to the thousandth!!!  Me 'n Jeff were both giving it all we had.  Do we call it a day and both get 2nd place bragging rights?

this is from the 2017 SCCA rule book

7.5 ties
Ties for trophy or point scoring positions shall be broken by comparing the
next  fastest  runs  from  each  course.  The  times  will  be  combined  and  then
compared to break a tie. If the tie persists, it shall be broken by a runoff, provided
both contestants agree. If agreement is not reached, the tie shall stand.
The additional run shall be used only to break the tie, and shall not be used to
place either contestant in a position other than those tied for.

finally got the can installed. Pretty happy with it.

Looks pretty good. How hard is yours to empty?
I recently installed one on the Vette and it looks great but to empty it without spilling anything will be a challenge.

Gunny

Did you get the Elite engineering one ? The one I have just unscrews from the bottom like a thermos, never spilled a drop. You don't want to let it get to full I supposed then there would be an issue.

Yes I did get the elite. So for my car you can install it two different ways. One is were most of the catch can is underneath the valvecover plastic shroud (this is the way I have mine) so when its like this you can unscrew the bottom but its so close to the frame that you have to tip the bottom over to get it clear to come out. The other way to install it requires a extension bolt. using the bolt pushes the catch can forward so it does not have to sit under the valve cover shroud. Elite is sending me that extension bolt, should be here tomorrow.

I have teched many cars with catch cans, some were pretty sketchy.  If you should add one please secure it with something more substantial than zip ties.

Will a ole Marine web belt do?
They are pretty damn strong! I'd bet it can hold 250lbs

Thanks for the explanation.

So I've been doing alot of reading about these catch cans and I'm not so sure if I should put on the Vette. I'm just saying that I've taken the front part of the intake off and I don't really see a build up of oil, My plugs look good, etc. etc.
Question I keep asking myself is if these catch cans are that helpful why aren't they OEM?
just wondering, catch can would look cool but do they really work?

I also use Howe Audio.
I did use RNR tires on Midlothian and Tommy did a great job mounting my tires on the new rims this year.

Hot damn! that was fun....
Great event
Man I have some work to do!

Gunny
Yes, you do! 1-0 by 0.002s

Lets do a little side bet.
Raw time for all the events your up 1-0 out of 9 events
$50.00
I will see you and raise you with a mid season bet, after the 5th event whoever is loosing has to wear a t-shirt from the winning manufacturer (chevy/corvette or BMW) at the 6th event of the year.
Lots of shirts to pick from but half of them would get me in trouble with the Board members. so I'm think you can wear this one.

at BRR anybody can ride along with anybody at any time. We debated this long and hard a few years ago and where we settled out was that the social / learning benefits far outweighed the competitive concerns.

Well reasoned and well stated. That would be my vote. Learning can and should take place far past any definition of novice.

Yea the above would be my vote also.

as always nice pictures David, I was not there again so I want to congratulate everyone, Joe again was too fast for me, also was Chris. Congratulations to Mindy for wining the BMW Trophy! I learned a lot having her as my co-driver this past season. Now everyone have their eyes on the 2017 season, looks like there won't be a POS e36 this season but instead a really nice e36 M3 and it is white and hopefully a lot faster.
Now, since I am that kind of guy who values tradition(not really).
I heard that Gunny is upgrading his car to CAM-S, finally decided to quit having the cheating Street Pax, or maybe he just got tired of getting beaten by a POS e36, who knows. Maybe he should Autox the fastest Elantra known by men. (if you follow him on Facebook you know what I am talking about).
Cheers!

Ahhhh Damn! that was good and it made me laugh.. I do have the world fastest Elantra (I've be doing some testing with 305's on each corner!) and it's my secret weapon if I ever need it, kinda like a James Bond gadget... Anyhow I'm not so sure of the overall seasons results (hopefully they will be posted soon) but I do know this, you got skirted in your own car for the BMW trophy! (Way to go Mindy, high five!) Your switching cars this year but maybe you should race your mountain bike! I bet it corners real good. I'll co drive it if you want some good input.   LOL

I pretty much agree with what everyone above has said, I know as an OD I've been asked many times if someone can ride along with someone else I have always said yes (its mostly the new drivers asking). I have ridden along with alot of drivers when I first started (John, Keith, Roger, Justin, Paul, Ricardo, etc.) and learned so much on how to drive, I've also had those same people in my car while I was driving just to watch what I was doing, I was probably more of a distraction for them than a advantage. Anyhow I believe that being able to jump in someone elses car or have someone jump in your car is a good thing, I think it made that weekend experience so much better and fun for me.

If I need to show up to a meeting and to vote on this just let me know.
