4  Results / Autocross / Re: Street Tire Class on: March 16, 2017, 10:14:03 AM
Does VMSC run a street tire class? TSCC and ODR/SCCA run an indexed/paxed class where you may run 200 TW tires. For example a BSP car on street tires competes and receives the BSP paxed time and runs against others on street tires with their class also receiving their paxed time.

BRR also has a street tire class.
5  General / Open Forum / Re: Riding with your co-driver? on: March 02, 2017, 12:03:02 PM
Isn't this what practice events are for?

My opinion, keep the rule the way it is. If you are a top 20 or so driver, you should not be riding with other good drivers at points events.

If you are new, you should/must have other experienced drivers ride with you. Any benefit at this level is far outweighed by the increase in safety. I am not going to learn much (anything) riding with a novice. But, I will learn a lot riding with a good driver.

Just my thoughts

It is the SCCA rule at national events. There are also very few, if any novices, at national events. It is not necessarily the rule at SCCA local events where there are plenty of novices. It is not the rule at BRR, for example.

David

As David said, at BRR anybody can ride along with anybody at any time. We debated this long and hard a few years ago and where we settled out was that the social / learning benefits far outweighed the competitive concerns.

Ricardo, you should have hung around. We had fun runs at the end of the day. I ran about 1.4 seconds quicker.

8  General Category / Ask the Competition Committee / Re: Opinions on running by class on: April 27, 2016, 12:01:52 PM
To be clear:
The computer decided nothing on the last event.  I go through and group the main categories (street, street touring, etc) into different heats and then balance from there.  Street was by far the largest category last event so HS and CS got shuffled out like STS got shuffled out of heat 3.

Its not perfect and I'm trying to improve my system and it will not always be fair.  Planning the heats out in advance doesn't work well with when walk-ups are able to skew the heat size.

Joe is spot on about this.

The "magic" is to arrange the classes so that there is close to an equal number of drivers in each heat. That will be somewhat random as the the classes represented and the number of drivers in each will vary from event to event. As Joe said, walk ups make it next to impossible to do before the event.  Once the heats are formed, the order in which you run those heats can be completely random. You could even have someone draw the order out of a hat before the drivers meeting. That would be unbiased and when you run should equal itself out over the course of the season.

9  General Category / Ask the Competition Committee / Re: Two driver cars on: March 29, 2016, 12:51:43 PM
"On hot days the best thing to do is check tire temps after each run and (if necessary) spray the tires to get them down to the correct temperature."

This is how you manage tire temps in the hot weather. A two gallon garden sprayer (they are usually less than $20)   will provide more than enough cooling for two drivers on even the hottest days.

Interesting. Thanks, James.

David
That is nice work. Thank you, James

Yes, interesting indeed. The overall results table would have looked very different had the 2nd heat been a little drier.

13  Results / Autocross / Re: Results 1 November 2015 on: November 02, 2015, 07:26:16 AM
Many thanks to everyone who put this event on; that course was a boatload of fun, even though folks like me in the first two heats almost needed a boat to get around it! :p

So speaking of the changeable conditions... It would be interesting to see results by heat.  Is that possible?

That parking lot is the only place I have ever actually been frightened
during an autocross ridealong.  Tongue

Looks like a long and interesting course!  Well marked, too.

Maybe that was at a PCA event.  Thanks for noticing the marking. That is always a design goal for me.

The place is really bumpy and dusty, as Chris told me, they put me on first heat because first heat is for slow drivers to clean up the course for the real fast drivers.

"The place is really bumpy and dusty"

That's true

"Chris told me, they put me on first heat because first heat is for slow drivers to clean up the course for the real fast drivers."

I'd like to know who told Chris that, or maybe he was just kidding. Truth is at least 80% of the course on Sunday was reused from the test and tune on Saturday so it was as clean as gets at Verona.

Plans are coming together for the autocross on November 2 @ VMP. One thing to remember is that is also the weekend that we return to Standard Time. Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next Sunday

21  Events / Autocross / Re: 2014 Schedule and ODs on: August 05, 2014, 11:47:03 AM
BRR is hosting this year, but they asked to use this date for the competition because VMP is a better lot.

And it helped resolve a conflict in the schedule to free up the original date (scheduled for Verona on 10/19) so that VMSC could have a challenge event with Tidewater SCC.

Now as for this;

"Ray is just designing the course since they are the host this year. We have done this before with BRR at VMP."

All true.

"how did they get assigned to running the course? "

If I remember correctly, I think I signed up and paid dues to be a VMSC member this year, so technically I'm "us" and not "they".  So if I wanted to be OD for a VMSC event I could , right?  By the way I'm also a member of BRR, NASA, and TSCC.

So let me ask you...What autocross club couldn't use another SCCA licensed Solo Safety Steward or two?  BRR will be holding a safety steward training class at the end of competition on Saturday at the Commonwealth Games Autocross. This class is the first step in obtaining that Solo Safety Steward license. There will be no charge for the training.

You can download the training materials here

No, the Tidewater guy is Steve Fehr
