Title: Help me class my build
Post by: Moses03 on July 30, 2016, 06:16:08 PM
Hello I have a 1979 Toyota corolla that we have installed a Chrysler 273 v8 into. We are making it street legal and are running street approved race tires. I was wondering what class it might fall under?

Id start with X-Prepared.

The interior is stripped except for the front seats and dash.

Not knowing anything else about the car and as long as the firewall isnt moved or heavily modified, X-Prepared should be fine.

Having an engine from another car in it would bring you to modified class.

The car is unchanged but we had to cut the transmission tunnel out. The firewall is is not moved back any.
Its a 1979 corolla base with a Chrysler 273 4.7L V8 to a 3 speed auto.
Rear end will be replaced with one from a Chevy s-10 with camaro shocks.
Aftermarket radiator, rims, and tires
Headers to a duel exhaust to the back of the car.
The engine is rebuild but stock no cam or bigger heads.

X/P allows engine swaps and you can modify the trans tunnel. As mentioned the engine compartment/firewall must remain pretty much original.
It's a step up from Street Mod and not quite as open as D/E Mod.
One thing to watch for is that you meet all of the safety rules whether you end up in X/P or E/M.

Thanks
I'll look into the safety rules for both classes. Were trying to come out for the September 4 event. If nothing else just to get information on what we need to do to get the car ready for next season.

The old 273 or the newer engine?

Im not sure what your asking. The engine we put into the corolla is from a 1965 Plymouth valiant.

The "newer" 4.7 was used in Dodge trucks for several years recently. It may still be in use. You're a lot better off with the older engine.
