Title: Dyno Day
Post by: wahoo5 on January 29, 2016, 08:11:47 PM
It is time for VMSC's annual Dyno day. It will be on Saturday, March 5, at EFI-Performance LLC,
4104 Eubank Rd., Richmond, Va 23231. Kevin Adolph will be our host as in the past. The first pulls begin at 10:00.

Pricing for 3 pulls with A/F ratio upon request depends on the total number of participants we have. The price schedule is:

1-5 - $65
6-10 - $55
11+ - $50

In recent years, we have not had any problems exceeding the 11 participants required to get the $50 price. Please respond to this thread or send email to me @ ogburn <at> gmail [dot] com if you want to participate. Please include your first and last name, and the year, make, and model of the car that will run on the Dyno as well as any additional info that would be helpful to Kevin to be prepared for you. For example, if your '94 Miata has a twin turbo LSx, Kevin would probably like to know. Specific questions about running on the Dyno should be sent to Kevin at kevin (at) flimflamspeed <dot> com.

Observers are always welcome. See you on March 5.

David

I'm in and I'm going to see if I can start a trend - guess how much hp and torque your vehicle will make.  I'd like to baseline the truck.

Justin Loehlein
1993 Dodge W350
Cummins, 5 speed
Dually - if the width is a problem, let me know

My guess, without having any clue what these things dyno at is 135hp and 300ft-lbs.

If the truck doesn't fit, I'll run the wagon.

Kevin says no duallys and no diesels. List the particulars for the wagon and I will substitute it.

Thanks.

I plan on being there.  Last year I brought my Ford/Volvo DOHC turbo in a 76 Capri II.  It's apart right now from complications related to cam upgrades.

This year I plan to bring my 79 MGB powered by another of the Folvo 16V DOHC turbo engines.  It runs lower boost so I'm only expecting about 210 hp.

Just trying to get some baseline pulls.

Guess your baseline numbers!

I may actually bring the Miata, since it runs now. I'll guess 101hp, 108ft-lbs.

Outside chance the Monza will be there. Many things left to do to it, and we're in the middle of moving into a new home, (what was I thinking???), so it's a long shot.

We are at 17 cars registered. Kevin's limit is 20 so if you can't make it, please let me know, and if you are on the fence, now is the time to commit. I have also now publicized it to the C&C crowd so I expect the last few slots to go quickly.

David, the Monza won't be there. Engine isn't ready, and if it was delivered to me today, I doubt I would have it installed in time. (ever gutted a bathroom?). Oddly, I was number 13 on the list, and that's the same number on the car. Well deserved, I might add. 666 may be a better number for it......

LOL. Sorry you won't make it, but thanks for letting me know. Bathrooms are money pits, sort of like race cars, but not nearly as much fun.

Let me know if a slot opens up. We need to Dyno the 240/400sx ChumpCar.

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,
I just spoke to David and am going to give up one of my spots for you.  The headache of getting two cars there is just too much (plus we can't get a sitter).  So David please remove one of mine and add Kevin's chump car... Looking forward to it!

Thanks

I made the change. I deleted Mike's Trailblazer and substituted the Chump Car.

Any idea what you are expecting for hp, Kevin?

Right now, you are second on the waiting list. I suspect you will be fine but we will make the call the middle of next week.

If anyone is signed up and you cannot come, PLEASE let me know.

David

Post by: Nismo0161 on February 29, 2016, 06:39:32 AM
Thanks MikeDe. David, we should have about 215 at the wheels. I think a new motor is rated at 260 at the crank. This motor probably has about 200K on it, but compression tests were very respectable.

So its been a rough week for me and cars. Was going to bring the audi and its now having fuel flooding issues. So i was going to bring  the Rover mini instead but today its water pump blew. So we are now playing it safe. Still going to bring the veloster but instead of the audi i am going to bring a 1996 BMW 328i Automatic with the 2.8l stright 6. I dont see any problems with both these cars making it this weekend. Just sad that i wont see a classic audi of mini on the dyno.

I am also disappointed to miss seeing the Audi.
Hopefully you'll have another opportunity to bring it out sometime.

I agree with Beth. I think a lot of us, including Kevin, were looking forward to seeing the Audi.

I hate to do this but I'm going to have to drop out.  My MGB has developed a massive oil leak between engine and bellhousing.  About a qt every 50 miles.

Engine is going to have to come out as I can't remove the transmission separately.  I doubt seriously I will have it back together in time.

Please give my slot to someone else.

Snow is forecast for Thursday night-Friday morning. While we hope it will not be a problem on Saturday, please check here or on the VMSC page on FB before you leave Saturday morning to make sure Dyno Day is not cancelled. We will make the call in concert with Kevin no later than 8:00 Satuday morning.

Don, sorry to hear that. Next year we will have to compare 2.3's on the dyno.

-Paul

I got my son to come over yesterday afternoon and we pulled it.  I must have made a mistake putting the gasket in the oil pan.  It extruded out from under the rear main.

We did not drain engine oil before pulling the engine.  I was shocked when we made the pull and oil started POURING out of the bellhousing as we tilted the engine to miss the front apron.

Gasket is on order for delivery Monday.  I guess I'll take some time now to redo the engine compartment and seriously try to clear up that wiring nightmare you commented about.

David as of right now with the forecast with the snow up there I'm going to have to pull out. Just too far for me to drive and chance with the snow if it does accumulate. If you do decide to cancel will there be a make up date?

Had an awesome time at Dyno Day.  Thanks David and everyone else who put this together.  Got to see and hear approximately 5000 horses (total) running down Laburnum! I think I may have made the least hp at 112hp and 104tq (top speed 114mph) all which I am thrilled with.  Stock my car had approx 90whp.....26 years and many miles ago.  I'll take it! My son and I have put many hours in this thing over the winter (so did Jeff and Audie before me) and we got 22 more than stock.  That's 9 more horses and 2 ftlbs more than my estimation.  Good Isht!

Just curious, of those who brought thumb drives today, what kind of file(s)
did you get?  Mine is just a jpg of the graph I also got on paper.

Last time I brought a thumb drive I actually got drf files, i.e. dyno data.
I had to download a (free) viewer to plot a graph from them, but it was
nice to know I had the actual data and not just a picture.
