Title: Local rally crosses
Post by: Stu on December 01, 2014, 04:34:05 PM
Looks like this sub has been dead for awhile, are there no longer any events in the area?  I'd love to try it out

Others may have more recent info, but there used to be a course in Orange County. DC SCCA used to run some events there. I have not heard of any local rallycrosses in a long time.

From what I hear it's a bit of a catch-22, because it's a lot of work to set up a
rally and not worth it if only a few people sign up.  Of course now that we don't
have them any more, not sure how to get enough people interested to start it
up again.

I think Stuart means this kind of Rallycross

That looks like a lot of fun, and it's a great way to beat the crap out of your car, unless you have a beata.

Not to be mix up with the European real RallyCross. http://www.fia.com/multimedia/image-gallery/world-rx-2014-rallycross-germany-gallery (http://www.fia.com/multimedia/image-gallery/world-rx-2014-rallycross-germany-gallery)

I would be interested in this type of event if there was one being held anywhere near Richmond.

When I joined the club in 1975, they were called "Field Trials". I ran one back then in my Chevy Vega. The last one VMSC had anything to do with, (IIRC), was in 2001 in Orange County. I co-drove Richard West's Subaru, and had a ball. It was all dirt and clay, but rather than an open field with a course marked with cones, it was a trail through wire grass, etc, and very few cones. No gravel and other than being dirty, no damage to the car. Oddly, your time is the total of your timed runs, rather than your fastest single run. We had several members getting pretty serious about these events back then, notably Jack Williams who had bought rally tires for his RX-7. Every time I see an overgrown field, I wonder if the owner would rent it for such an event.
