Title: Kart Racing
Post by: TonyR64 on July 14, 2014, 02:45:05 PM
Here's what I'm into when I'm not autoXing; video from the Hampton Roads Kart Club.

I think I had a little too much adrenalin in my bloodstream when I passed the driver in red...I lost it a couple laps later and he zoomed right on by, lol.

Cool! having more open wheelers would be fun! Are you planning on making it to the monthly meeting? Trying some karts at Geforce Karts would be fun.

I am a G-Force regular participant and on my constant travels to different states I always seek a karting track to play on.  Are you attending the meeting tonight?

I am intrigued, please post more information about your club, and adult go-kart racing around the area (not just G-Force, I'm there a lot myself). :)

Other than Geforce and an electric kart facility on the Southside of Richmond, there's not much in the way of karting for us here in the area other than dirt oval racing. There's a dirt track in Ashland (Capital City Speedway) and a dirt track in Amelia Co.

Here's a clip from the HRKC Facebook page:

For over 40 years, HRKC has been bringing racing to young and old alike on Sunday mornings at Langley Speedway, located in Hampton, Virginia. With many former members becoming present-day notable drivers—including Tyler Lester (currently racing Bandeleros), Brandon Gdovic (K&N Pro East), and Mike Skeen (World Challenge)—HRKC is a nursery for up-and-coming drivers to learn the basics as they work towards their dreams. For others, HRKC is a hobby, allowing go-karters a chance in the driver’s seat from March thru November.

Just picked up a TrackMagic Racing Chassis with the Parilla Leopard 125cc TAG motor.  Very strong kart but will be investing in some new tires and a MYCHRON4 and sensors for it really soon.  This Kart has made me forget about GForce................  Insanely fast!!!!!!!!  My son will be autocrossing this real soon.

lol, cool! Is your son a senior or junior driver? I started my son with a 4 cycle, but he really wants a 2 cycle too, lol. He will definitely enjoy that motor...it's what I'm running :)

I really do not know if he is a junior or senior yet.  I will read the SCCA rulebook and see if this can supply me with an answer.  Right now I am training him how to drive it and control it.  Fast learner!

The minimum age for KM is 15yrs old. If your son is younger than that, he will have to run the Junior class.
(see p.156 section 19.2)

Ok got it. Just got familiar with the information that you supplied from the rule book.  He has a 1 1/2 before he can qualify for KM which is great since he will be a novice participant.  So (JA) Junior Class A it is then!  Time for some class identifier decals!!!!!!  At the moment I am trying to learn about the various tire brands.  The Kart has MG yellows on it and the get sticky quick so I am thinking about ordering another set.  What brand are you running on your Kart?

I also run MG Yellows...and you want them to get sticky, lol. That's how they grip the road :)

You don't want to deal with cold, slick tires, although the rule book says juniors are to run MG Reds (harder compound). I'm not sure if this is enforced in our club because I've noticed other's using Bridgestones.

My son is really getting on my back to move to 2 cycle...and I was just getting his 4 cycle running good, lol

If you ever need any help working on them please contact me @  443.760.5642 or if you would like to share any pointers please do.  New territory for me but I am having fun learning this though.  The newly discovered motivation is finally getting to share the motorsport with my son!  Oh yeah tell Tyrell he looks like he is ready for that 2 stroke!!!!!!!!

I actually work at Ft. Eustis and never knew that they had a track there.  And you can test on it?  When are the testing days or do you just make a phone call?  I will have to put this on the agenda quick!!!!!!

Sorry about that James, I meant to say THE next Saturday practice event, not next Saturday lol

As far as Ft Eustis is concerned, practice for private karts is on the weekends from 10-noon. We'll definitely have to get down there!

My oldest child, Clay, was in town for a couple weeks. We got a chance to get down to VIR and play a little.  The guy at the track said they were considering starting a new racing series with the Local Option 206 motor, and Clay put on a fine demonstration for him...5 seconds quicker than their 4cycle rental karts!

Here are some pics and video.

I had a blast getting to learn this track and getting used to this motor/clutch combo. Best time was lap 10 @ 49.060.

This was one of my first times out on this course with this kart; as you can see, there's a lot of room for improvement, lol. I need to get used to everything too; finding the proper lines, get rid of the oversteer in the set up, and of course gear ratios that will work best for me. This is a very fun track to drive! :)
