I have a full cage coming next week, so out came the bar.  It's a Hard Dog Hard Core Hard Top bar with all accessories (backing-plates for the landing plates, bolts, nuts, washers, etc...).  Local pickup only.

I also have a passenger-side seat belt assembly, if anyone's interested.

Hmmm...  Looking around the shed reveals more goodies:

NA Miata stock radiator:  $35
Power Steering pump, bracket, reservoir, and all lines:  $100
Factory A/C:  $150

What year is your Miata?  I might be interested in the A/C.

Sounds like someone is building a Spec Miata...  If mine was still running, I'd be all over that bar - unfortunately...  Maybe this summer.

I am, and the cage is the only thing holding me back (well, that and a racing license...).  I'm also looking to ditch that boat-anchor DP class and move into DSP (0.860 v. 0.836).

Spec Miata is a tough class.  It takes a LOT of money to run up front.  I wish you luck...  NASA's Spec E30 and Spec Focus seem to be different, though.  Then again, autocrossing a Spec Miata is a different story.

Scott,
Isn't the E30 spec fairly new?  I think any established spec can end up costing a lot to run up front.  One of the really appelaing features of Spec Miata is the number of entrants in a race.  MARRS gets near 40 cars every race.  So no matter where in the pack you are, there is likely to be a handful of folks ro race with.  That's what appealed to me; I wouldn't have to win to have a blast.

One other thing I noticed about Spec Miata after playing pitcrew for a few races...it's brutal!  Anybody that gets in to it better be ready for a bunch of dents, torn off bumper covers, and the like!  Wild!

Here's wishing Adrian good luck with the build, and eventual track racing!

Thanks, guys.  I'm still a good way away from running, at least a year, if not more.  The really-long-term goal is to keep enough mechanical stuff straight that I can eventually build a Locost 7.

I had the same thoughts as Dave.  Just being out there, gaining experience, and having some folks against whom to compete:  that's all I'm looking for out of it.  If you look at my autocross times, I'm never at the front, but I have a blast.

And I think it's--more often that not--a combination of driver skill and circumstance than car prep.

The absolute coolest thing about SM, though, is that if you get cold feet, you can generally sell the car for almost 100% of what you put into it.

Update:  the bar is sold!

Still looking for a good home for the other pieces, if you know anybody who's looking...

We've been getting 25+ Spec E30's at the races so far this season.  The car that won the national championship in '06 had a 190k+ mile original stock engine, and a 175k-mile spare engine just in case.  It is a top-5 car to this day, on that same engine.  And from what I've seen so far, cheating in Spec E30 has been minimal to nonexistent.

Meanwhile, a front running Spec Miata engine costs something like $8k+ from Sunbelt... but the point about finding someone to race with anywhere in the pack is an excellent one.  A battle is a battle, whether it's for 3rd or 30th overall.

Oh, here are several examples of why that class is called "Wreck Miata" or "Spec Pinata" hahaha:

Looks like a lot of fun regardless,
