In case anyone's interested, NASA is holding a "circuitcross" at VIR's Patriot course (1.1 mile roadcourse) on Feb. 25th.
It's basically a high-speed auto-x on a small roadcourse and I thought some folks might be interested in trying this out.
It's a good way to get a sample of roadcourse driving at a reduced cost.

VIR-Patriot Circuitcross
Thanks,
Brian

Thanks Brian!  Here is the direct link to the event info & pre-reg:

https://www.nasaproracing.com/nasa_event/show/?event_id=436

Yes it is twice as much $ as one of our regular autocrosses but that is for 10+ timed runs (maybe more like 15+ if the number of entries doesn't improve) on a real racetrack with elevation changes... no cones... 4th gear on the straights... etc.  Here's some in-car vid of the place:

It's a blast.  Definitely a great way for any regular autocrosser to get a taste of roadcourse driving without having to commit to a full weekend HPDE ($300+ in entry fees alone.)

It can also be done as a day trip... sign up for an afternoon heat and you don't need to be down there until noon! Cheesy

Thanks again & see ya there,

Jon

We have just reduced the maximum number of entries for this event by 20% (from 60 to 48, or 12 per heat instead of 15) intending to provide more seat time and more fun for all participants. Drivers will now get at least 12 timed runs each, but probably more!

(Do the math... 120 minute heats for 12 cars each at 30-second start intervals... including time for worker breaks, timer errors, cleanups, etc... that's still a LOT of runs!)

Therefore the entry list is now 79% full (10 spots remaining.) Heat 1 has 3 spots left, Heat 2 has 5 spots left, Heat 3 is FULL, and Heat 4 has 2 spots left. Please sign up SOON to get one of the few remaining spots if you are interested.  Thanks!

Details are here:

Thanks again,

I just found a vid of *exactly* what a well-driven Circuitcross / Patriot Course run looks like:

Fun fun fun,

Jon, it's always difficult to get a sense of speed from a video, but one thing is obvious:  the car would be much easier to drive if it didn't have that 10 turns lock to lock "riverboat" steering ratio.  That's annoying just to watch!!  Great video though.

I am happy to report that we had a safe and fun (although very wet) day at VIR on Sunday.  Most drivers got between 15 and 20 timed runs!  We're doing it again on Sunday April 1st:

It looks like 2/24/08 will be the only Circuitschool & Circuitcross at VIR in 2008.  (3/30/08 has become a private event and 7/27/08 has just been cancelled by the venue.)

There are 40 of 60 spots left.  Info & pre-reg are here:

https://www.nasaproracing.com/nasa_event/show/?event_id=621

Thanks in advance & happy holidays,

Jon
