I realized that, even though registration for the April 30 rally has been open for a while, I forgot to post about it.  So here it is.

Click here to register for the 2nd annual Tip-Toe Through the Tulips through USRally.com.

Update:  Because USRally.com appears to be dead today, I have also opened registration for the rally on our own system.  It's pretty slick; try it.  (I actually wrote support for rally events a long time ago.)

Update: Online registration is closed, now that... uh... the event has already happened.  Smiley

The starting and ending point will be at Tuckahoe Village Shopping Center at the western edge of Henrico County, on VA-6 (Patterson Avenue).  The after-rally dinner will be at Frank's West Italian Restaurant in that shopping center.

Click this link for a map, or use whatever site you like to map directions to 11238 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA 23233.

I still need workers for this event.  If you would like to work, please send me a U2U or email.  I have two crews now but I would like to have four.

Since Jeff and I teamed up, Audie and Donna are free that day.  I will check and see if she still wants to work the event.

Donna says she will work.  She is going to check with Audie and see if she is up to it.

Pasha and Gordon Paterson put on a fine Tour Rally.  Twelve cars competed on the course and saw beautiful scenery, well-run controls, and interesting roads.  I compliment them on a fine event .

The workers put in a great deal of effort and our thanks go out to them.

To those members who don't rally I say that you're missing the beauty that motosports can offer and - on a practical level - not earniing any VMSC points.

Life provides us only so many opportunities to experience something wonderful, new, or well conceived.  Don't let the rally experience pass you by.

Thank you, Pasha and Gordon.

Thanks from the rallymasters go to...
...the Edwardseseses for arranging the SCCA sanction and making sure we had all our forms etc. in order.  (...plus congrats for taking 1st Equipped.)
...the Passuts for doing the official safety check and working the course.
...Donna Marx and Audie Chenery for reviving the tradition of wives relishing the chance to assess real penalty points on their husbands.
...Frank's West Italian Restaurant for putting up with an invasion of ~40 crazy car clubbers.
...all of the competitors, whose enthusiasm makes it all worthwhile, somehow.

With luck, if we don't lose our roads to suburban creep, we'll do it again next year.

Lesson learned this time around: Don't wait until March to start planning an April rally. :duh:

Results will be up this week.

Great event!  I still think that if you view the results statistically that CP4 has an error in it somewhere but since we were still 1 point behind the Edward's no use in protesting Cheesy

But seriously, it was a great day and the roads were nice.
Thanks to all who worked to make it happen.

You and Tom won stock. You beat Matt and me by about 10 points. I think you had 26? and we had 27? Congrats.

I was pointed to exactly where the error was -- the official timing spreadsheet had the CAST at 34 where the NRIs had 43.  Fortunately, it was only for that one instruction; the very next one set the speed to 34.  So, I calculated the difference in time that would have resulted from everyone going 43mph, and gave everyone an automatic negative time allowance (because the error made everyone early).  That put everyone's score back into the realm of reality.  The results were announced at the dinner with the corrections already applied.

Oh I know you made the correction and it was a good catch and the sign of a good Rallymaster to be able to fix on the fly but I still think something is Hinky in Hanauma Bay Wink

Didn't you say that one of the people who beat you on Sunday also helped you install your rally computer?  Hmm.    haha

Results are posted... sort-of.
I don't have any info on SCCA and VMSC membership for the competitors.  What's shown is the best that my memory can do... please drop me an email or U2U if any of the data is incorrect.

Dave Lumpkin has just sent me some data from his rally computer about the whole Leg 4 fiasco, and I think there may be more work to do for those scores.  Since the error was applied equally to everyone, it will only remove an unjustified stain from the equipped teams' pride.  Wink

Cool, and you are right.  It is partially about pride for me but also about learning.  This was our first event with the computer and to have one leg so far off makes me NEED to know why.  If it was an error on my part that is fine I just need to know.  If not I will constantly be questioning my navigation for every event.

Sitting around talking about the event afterward I could only surmise that I had made a mistake.  The rally computer showed us coming in on the dot.  If Jeff had done something incorrectly on his own our computer would have showed us our error as we arrived.    But since the computer showed us nice and close to 0 the only answer can be (assuming no error in the NRI's) that I made a mistake.  I forgot a CAST change or ignored a pause or just pushed a button wrong.  If this is the case then it doesn't bode well for our future events.  And without being able to determine the error that was made I will always be second guessing myself and that WILL lead to mistakes or at least not providing timely guidance to my driver.

Don't get me wrong Pasha... I know how hard it is to put a rally together, especially if you are running late in doing so(like my rally last fall).  It is stressful and distracting trying to determine what you missed (you feel that you must have missed something in your rush) where it might have been missed etc...

On my rally if I didn't feel the checkpoint results were reliable I just dropped that checkpoint from the points.  Of course this is at the discretion of every Rallymaster.

Looking at the results statistically (CAVEAT: I am no statistician and am making this stuff up as I go based on my limited knowledge) I see the following:
• I took the score for each team with CP4 and w/o CP4.  The average change between the 2 scores is a 32.13% improvement(this includes the teams who did well on that CP)
  • The Median change is a 29.22% Improvement.
  • I also averaged the scores per checkpoint for each team.  The Average score per checkpoint w/ CP4 is 53.46 and w/o CP4 the average is 45.81 which is ~14% improvement.
  • CP4 had the highest average score (99) while the next highest average score was CP1 (61).
  • I re-did the math removing CP1 but leaving CP4 in the equations in order to compare the impact of an individual checkpoint on the results.
  • Taking the average total score for each team with and without CP1 shows an average improvement of ~12%.
  • With CP1 the average score per CP is still 53.46 and the average score per CP w/o CP1 is 51.99% which is ~2.7% improvement.
  •
What does any of this math prove?  Nothing concrete.  (aside from the fact I occasionally like to get my geek on)

It is interesting that the one checkpoint has such an impact on the scores where as others are not so heavy.

Like I said in the beginning, it is a bit about pride but mostly about confidence and knowing that I have a good grasp of my duties as navigator and am not going to constitute a liability to my team mate.
