New to Richmond
«
on:
December 19, 2011, 05:38:44 PM »
Hi everyone!
My name's Cliff, I'm fairly new to Richmond (moved here from Ohio over the summer). I was the random guy that showed up to the G-force event last month and raced with some of you.
I'm excited to see an active car club in the area! I came out to spectate/work at the VMSC/BRR shootout, but didn't have any of my cars available to compete, hopefully I can get in on the action next year. I've done a few SCCA auto-x's, but mostly did trackdays with NASA out in the Midwest, and would like to continue doing both once the house there sells and I have some disposable income again.
I'm not really partial to any make/model, but my current cars are a C5 Z06, GC8 2.5RS, '88 Iroc-Z28, AW11 MR2, and a '97 Ford Aerostar (one of these things is not like the others haha, this is my house/Home Depot trusty steed). I don't have many pictures of the vehicles, but here's a build thread I did on the MR2 last year if you're interested:
http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/rring-an-85-mr2/30307/page1/
Haven't really settled on the next project yet, it'll either be a GRM $20xx car, refreshing the '88 Camaro that's still stock after 10 years, or another Miata/E30. I've sold one of each within the past couple years, and miss them.
Anyway, looking forward to meeting and racing with all of you in the next couple months!

Excellent job on that MR2! I have an '86 with a few more miles on it, and not so lucky as yours in the rust department.
Still fun to drive though.

Welcome and ditto on bringing out the C5 - we like C5's. . . . and some C6's
Hope to see you soon at our events - we start up in late March
I think we have a membership sale going on if it hasn't ended - email our first vice president under [Contact Us] to get the details

Merry Christmas!
Thanks for the warm welcome.
I've auto-xed the Vette a couple times, but haven't had it out on track yet since I still owe money on it. I've got about a year left to pay it off, so maybe this will be the year!. Usually its the MR2, with the Subaru as backup, for events.
John,
Thanks for the heads up, I'll definitely email the VP. Kinda on that note, is there a general sticky or "About Us" page that I could go to for more information? I didn't see anything other than the meeting times on the home page. Do you guys follow SCCA classing rules for cars?
Hope everyone's having a good holiday!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
As of 5:30PM this evening, my house (The Compound) in Ohio is SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let 4 years of repressed automotive shenanigans commence!
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the practice auto-x soon! In the meantime, if anyone comes across any clean TVR 2500M's, 1.8L NA Miatas, or 89-91 325i/is's...let me know!
Just wanted to share the good news with everyone, I am hopelessly excited and relieved to be free of the stress and responsibility. WOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave finished second overall in the autocross on Sunday. I did not go to this one. We will both drive it at the national tour in College Station in 3 weeks. It will be my first time running the Camaro. I am really looking forward to it.

I don't like the $6,800 asking price, but
this Miata
does have some nice stuff on it. And an asking price is just that, right...an
asking
price. Who knows what he'd let it go for.

Interesting, definitely does have some nice bits on it. Any idea where it's located?
I've been scouring craigslist the last few days, and found this:
http://norfolk.craigslist.org/cto/2858721988.html
Only about an hour away, and while it's stock, at least that means I don't have to worry about unknown previous mods throwing me out of the class I'd like to run in.
Then again, I just found this:

Weekend report!
Never heard back from the guy with the Miata. Oh well, thankfully there's one or two more on CL.
Went to Annapolis on Sunday and saw/drove the TVR. It's in OK shape, the current owner is a heck of a nice guy and definitely takes care of it, but like any 40 year old car it has its quirks. This one needs some fiberglass work (stress cracks, chips, and normal stuff, but one of the hood latches has also broken out and needs to be re-glassed), several of the gauges are non-functional, I'd like to replace the exhaust, the doors are sagging, the throttle sticks a bit, the indicators don't work, etc., etc. I'm currently pricing out the cost and difficulty of most of the fixes and am going to come to a decision. In the meantime, several friends and coworkers know I'm on the hunt for cars for an autox car. One sent me this:
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/2879893196.html
WOW! I have always wanted an FD, and more specifically a black/black R1 package. May call on that one this weekend. Granted I don't think its classed very well, but still!

I want you drive mine after you drive Dave's so you can tell me if it's the car, me, or both that are clueless.

You are 100% correct sir
. My rationale on the current cars:
Subaru - Daily Driver, 100% stock....I don't race the DD for work reliability purposes
Camaro - Down with a rod knock, driveable, but awaiting a full overhaul with LS1/T56 goodness
MR2 - RACECAR! I do actually use this for track days, however not being built for an auto-x class, it goes directly to SM despite the modest modifications.
Z06 - Tracking this actually directly led to the MR2 purchase, when I realized I can completely write off an AW11 for the cost of one set of tires. Anything salvageable after the wreck just puts me in the black
.
In all reality I'll bring the MR2 out, run SM, and work on the loose nut behind the wheel. I just like dreaming big! Doesn't really come across forums well since I don't know everyone that well yet.

Funny. You are definitely not clueless. Ours has a lot of mods to address some of the issues with yours, like the limited slip that only smokes the inside tire for a second or two coming out of corners!
How is the Monza rebuild coming?
