Going to run on the ring Tuesday 23 August! Thanks to Justin's research i'll be renting a Golf GTI

No kidding ! I remember telling someone at the Auto-x Sunday how I only had 2 hours sleep the night before and something woke me up in bed that morning between 4-6am shaking my legs or the entire bed!

How is it going over there ? I can't wait to see some video ! keep us posted

here is my lap at the ring!
It was a blast. If I ever go again I'm going to get a car with just a tiny bit more horsepower. Some of the hills were pretty steep. The GTI struggled a little bit.

Awesome!  So did they let you run the GoPro or did you have to rent one?

Had to rent it. if you dont have the right sticker on your car that little lady directing traffic will get ya!
The two gig is good for 2.5 laps at best.

Also if someone crashes and they close the track you get no refund!
If you crash your rent a race car your liable for the first 8000 euro (about $10,000)

How many laps did you get to do?
And, how did you like the paddle shifter?

Looks awesome. That Gallardo made a nice soundtrack for part of the lap. It's on my bucket list too.

I got all 4 laps in.
They closed the track for about 15 minutes (motorcycle crashed)
2 wet laps (light rain)
2 semi dry laps.

I was lucky because someone I knew from the states was there also. We were able to park and shoot the _hit after each lap.

I just got back from the Nurburgring as well.  Excellent time, thankfully it was dry and sunny.  I rented a Renualt Sport Clio Cup (200hp, 2700-2800lbs) from the same place Gunny got his GTI.  I ended up running 5 laps despite the track being closed for ~30 minutes of the 2 hours allotted to tourists due to an accident, also involving a motorcycle.

My fastest lap (the 5th) was just a hair over 9 minutes bridge to gantry including a section where we had to slow down for road work.  I'm pretty pleased.  My 4th lap was slightly slower, but the video is much more interesting (more traffic...most notably a BMW M6 and Ferrari 550 around the 6 minute mark).

I am seriously impressed at how y'all can just jump onto a course you've never driven, in unfamiliar cars, and drive it like that.

Thanks, it all comes down to seat time.  Also, several hundred laps of the Nurburgring in GT4 helped a lot Smiley

(There's one here at VIR, but I'm too busy driving the real thing...  Wink )

GT4 is nothing fancy...it's Gran Turismo 4 on the Playstation 2.  I don't even have a steering wheel, I just use the controller.  The Nurburgring has so many corners (and so many blind corners) that just driving around it in the video game really helped me remember how sharp each turn was and what followed it.

Enjoy VIR this weekend.  I definitely need to get out and do a few more HPDEs next year.
