Subject: [SCCARoadRally] Proposal for 2007 SCCA Championship Series

Subject: Proposal for 2007 SCCA Championship Series

The following proposal was presented by me at the USRRC Town Hall Meeting on Saturday.  Many of us fear that we will see the demise of the National RoadRally Championship in the near future and I am hoping to have suggested a format that would entice the many regional and local rallyists to become envolved.

Thanks for your interest in rallying.  And thanks for whatever comments you can offer to this forum.  Please feel free to share this proposal with whomever you choose.  More discussion is better than less.

Proposal for 2007 SCCA Championship Series

RoadRally Town Hall Meeting - October 22, 2005

Premise – Realign the current National RoadRally Championship to bring all levels of competitors into a single series for the enhancement of the sport.

Format – Eliminate National and Divisional Rallies and replace with Regional Rallies.

Rally Format – Each SCCA Regional Rally will use either the RRRs or their own regional Rally Regulations.  The regulations to be used will be identified in the entry flyer.  The type of rally will be clearly identified as Course, Tour, or GTA (Gimmick).  Compliance with the event regulations will be administered by the RRB only in those cases where the RRRs are to be used.

Classes – Championship classes to be Course, Tour and GTA and will be further separated through classification by Lifetime Points.  Year-end award to be made in Lifetime Point categories of Grand Master, Master, Expert, and Senior (all non classified entrants will be considered to be in the Senior Classification) for each championship class.  Individual Class determined by Lifetime Points ranking as of January 1 of Championship year.  Future Lifetime Points will be awarded on those events complying with existing RRRs having a minimum length of 180 miles and will be designated as a Lifetime Points Rally.  Championship Points earned for these events will count as two events.

Championship Points – Points to be awarded per the RRRs in whichever regional class the entrant is entered on the individual event.  Each of the twelve Championships to be based on the point total of an individual’s best ten finishes.  No worker points will be awarded.

Got this explanation from Dave Head:

First, the proposed change is for 2007.  It's too late to change anything for 2006 because of SCCA rules for making changes don't allow that.  So, it doesn't affect what we're going to do for next year.

Yes, Nationals and Divisionals would be elimianted under the proposal.  All SCCA road rallies would be "regionals", its just that regionals that are over 200 miles and 24 controls (or whatever the RRB decides is appropriate for National status at the time, as it is supposed to be 180 miles and 24 controls next year) would be "regionals for lifetime points" as well as carrying double the 5 championship points that other regionals carry.  So, the "regionals for lifetime points" would be the equivalent of Nationals, but would still be "regionals".  The details will have to be worked out, if this is adopted at all, but the likelihood of it being adopted is pretty good.  Hardly anyone was heard opposing the idea.

This is meant to help the availability of National championship rallying.  _Any_ SCCA sanctioned road rally could be used to accumulate National championship points.  Each of the 8 (?) rallies you guys are putting on this year would carry 5 National Championship points to win.  That's 40 points to anyone that could win all 8, in any class - a win in "vintage" class is equal to a win in "E" class is equal to a win in "S" class.  You could even mix and match equipment classes, but your win points would go into your lifetime points ranking class - senior, expert... grandmaster - there are 4 classes and I can't remember the ranking or the names.  Only 10 more points would be necessary to get a national championship, which might be accrued by running and winning a couple more rallies in another region or maybe one of the "regional for lifetime points" rallies like Catoctin Monte or Wonderland rallies that were run out of DC.

Anyway, the idea is that people shouldn't have to get on airplanes and spend great gobs of vacation time (away from family) in order to do well in the National Road Rally Championship.  This looks like it would work, and frankly, I'm excited.  Rallies run locally might pick up 1 or 2 more cars from closer National rallyists like Chuck Lauroere and Rick Beatty, and/or Bruce Gezon and Fred Mapplebeck, as well as maybe Jack von Kaenel and Jim Friedman, who came to our National last year.  IOW, it cuts both ways - the local rallies could attract a few more people that are interested in National points.
