I guess we'll have to put the standard suspension back on so we can turn right again.  Wink

Its still a "Nascar Rally".  I just liked the name better.

Basically, during competition segments of the NRI's there will be no instruction which says turn right.  Which made finding a fracking route a mondo pita.

The final Rally event for the ODR 2005 season is scheduled to occur on 11/12/2005.  This event will be listed as a Course type rally due to some of the things that had to be done in order to make the premise of the event work.

Originally the event was named "Left Turns Only."  It started when I made an off-hand comment that it would be cool to do a 'Nascar' style rally in which you only turn left.

Foot meet mouth...

Anywho, so I apparently 'volunteered' to organize this event.

After having waited 9 months to actually begin working on the rally I have found making only left turns to be rather difficult and get any where more than a mile from the start point :omg:

So the premise has 'evolved' into a sort of Left Turns only event.

The published route instructions will at no point instruct you to turn right during a competitive portion of the event.  There will information in the General instructions  to help compensate for the 'leftwardness' of the instructions and help you go someplace.

The event will start at the Exxon/Dairy Queen on Rt 5 just off I-295 near Richmond/Sandston/Varina, Va.  First car will be off at 10:01 am.  The course is currently expected to be ~120 miles in length.  A large portion of the roads are at 40mph and above so it won't take quite as long as you might expect from previous rallies.

The event will end in Waverly, Va with the cool down/dinner/points thrash/Awards Ceremony taking place at the Virginia Diner.

This layout is intended to help balance the travel time of Richmond versus Beach folks.  It would be good idea if coming from a distance in separate vehicles that you at least stop at Waverly to leave one vehicle if you are from the beach.  Waverly is about 45 minutes to an hour (less than 48 minutes according to mapquest) froim the start point.

I am hoping this will be a fun and brisk event.  It is not intended to be a brain twister.  just something different.  Hope to see you there!

Alright, the generals for this event are written and will be sent off to Mr. Smith shortly.  We made a trip on Saturday and measured out the distances.  (Thanks again Chuck).

We lopped 20-30 miles off the course in order to get everyone to the end point before dark and to keep boredom to a minimum.

Hope to see you there!

Since I have already done some things that are out of the ordinary for this rally I thought '...why stop now?'  So as I receive and answer questions about the rally I will post them here.
• Is this a course rally?  'I assume from the information under the heading Numbered Route Instructions (NRIs) Course Following on page 2 that Autumn’s Fire is a TSD, and that the course following priority precludes the event from qualifying as a Tour rally.  MRD’s were not mentioned, but priorities 3,4, &6 certainly qualify as MRD’s'

Yes.  I really didn’t want to have a course Rally since they scare away people but I had to do some creative course design in order to keep with the original spirit the event was conceived with.  At best it is course rally light.

  • When encountering a closed control are rally cars to continue on without stopping? 'Closed Control Procedure on page 3 refers to “Flying Controls”, a term that I am not familiar with.  I assume that it means rally cars are not to stop, but since closed controls are not defined in the RRR’s I would like to be sure.'

Yes.  Closed controls have no effect of the competitors other than score.  We will record an ‘in time’ for each competitor and score accordingly but the competitors can ignore the existence of Closed controls for all other purposes.  Clear as mud?

  • At the Safety Meeting, or in some other format, will you define how we are to distinguish a closed control from an open control?
Yes.  Closed controls will have a ‘Closed’ sign attached to the checkpoint sign.  We will show an example at the Safety Meeting.

  • Will the Next NRI be listed on the CDS?  (See appendix example on page 5)
Maybe?  The CDS may show information about the outmarker or perhaps a CAS when leaving.  The purpose of the example in the appendix is to help people understand #5 of the course following priorities.  In this case the CDS may instruct the competitors to insert an NRI between to NRI later in the rally.  For example, the last NRI prior to CP2 may be 26.  The CDS may have note that says to insert this new NRI between NRIs 31 & 32.  This is just a tool I came up with to help me get you to turn right without printing a right turn in the initial NRIs per the spirit of the “NASCAR” rally.

  • Does the "NRI" inserted by a CDS have full status as an NRI in the context of Priority Rule #2, such that (in the example) the inserted NRI *MUST* be executed before I can consider NRI #28 available for execution? (added 11/11 4:35pm)

Yes.  The NRI inserted has full and complete status as an NRI.  There is nothing that is on the NRI sheet or inserted via a CDS that will not be executed.
