Adrenaline Autoworks on Hull St. is doing cages for $100 a point.

http://www.adrenalineautoworks.com/pages.php?pid=2

No affiliation, and I haven't yet seen any of their cage work, but it's certainly worth looking into.

Hope it helps,

Jon
ps- I may know where a 5-speed '86ish 325e can be had for like $400.  It's ugly, the interior is trashed, and it needs a windshield, but it runs and drives just fine.  PERFECT for Lemons.  Wink

Spoke to Rick there today. He is looking to get us in soon. Price is now $150 per point. He said should be around $1k and they will install. Is this ok?

EDIT: Jeff spoke to someone who may be half this price. Justin - he sent you the information via email. Let us know your thoughts.

I wouldn't get Adrenaline Autoworks to do it.  Stock Car Products would be fine, I would still call Roll Cage Components and see if they will donate a cage or labor.

I say we go with the known commodity. Can you get it to RCC and see what they say? If not, I can bring it next monday or over the weekend.

I'll try and bring it down there some time.  I typically get to work before they open and leave after they have closed, so I'll have to drop it off after hours to give them a chance to look at it.  Is anyone available between 6pm and 8pm some time this week to drop it off with me?  Or if someone is available during the day to take it during business hours I can let you pick it up from my house.

On another note, who is signing up for the Track Daze March 2-3 event?

edit - hmm, I just saw that this is on a Monday and Tuesday.  I haven't made up my mind on whether or not I want to use vacation days to do this.

Why don't we take it to the NASA circuit cross. It is the 22nd of Feb on the Patriot course. Only $80.

Update: I dropped the car off at Stock Car Products for them to give an estimate on the cage.

Do you get consecutive laps in a Circuit Cross?  I don't know if I will be able to go, but if anyone else wants to take the car let me know and you can pick it up beforehand.

Dave and I did the circuit cross on the Patriot course last year, but it was ultimately rained out. As I recall, there were a number of warmup laps by class with no passing, but the timed laps were all solo laps.

Alright, we got an estimate on the cage from Stock Car Products.  For a 6 point cage made out of 1.75" x .095" HREW tubing with NASCAR door bars we are looking at $310 for the steel and either $420 or $700 for labor depending on whether we want it bolted or welded to the car.  If everyone is fine spending an additional $50, I would rather get it welded.  They said they can get it done in about 4 days and can start on it whenever we pay them.

What are everyone's thoughts?  Given their short turnaround, we could wait until we hear about being accepted.  That would give time to shop around some more if we wanted to as well.

Let me know and I can go pick the car up...or leave it there and have them start on the cage, if that is what everyone wants.

2 questions:

1. Can they provide any references (other cages they've built)?

2. Are you comfortable with HREW tubing?  Very few sanctioning bodies allow it, and the LeMons folks strongly recommend DOM...  Did they give you a price for DOM?

Good point. I'm pretty sure Adrenaline uses DOM and their price is similar.

I'm not too worried about the tubing since we shouldn't be going that fast.  From the website, it looks like they only use HREW, I can call and see if they can make one out of DOM and how much that would be and get any references as well.  Scott, can you check with Adrenaline?  Check on their timelines too.  I have been down there and their shop is VERY small, but if they can do a full 6 point cage for $900 out of DOM that sounds like the better deal.

I'll call them today.

Spoke to Rick at Adrenaline. We can drop the car off on the 31st of January. $900 installed using DOM. Should be done in a week or so. They will need a 50% deposit ($450).

That sounds good. When do you expect we will hear whether our application is accepted?

Cool, let's plan on pursuing this then.  Scott, just to be super clear, this is for a full cage with roof loop and windshield posts, not just a 6pt roll bar, right?

That sounds like the better deal.  I've not heard of a 6-point bar (most bars are 2- or 4-points), so I think we should be ok, but still better to ask, I suppose...

Adrian.....would you mind giving him a call (Rick) 525-6738(Local).

Tell him we have the Jetta for Lemons that Scott called about. You definitely know the right questions to ask.

Hey if you guys just want put some track time on this car to make sure it's screwed together correctly and get some butts in the seat before Lemons - gimme a call or email, we can figure something out.  First thing that comes to mind is the entire lunch hour at any number of VIR/Summit events between now and then.

As for Adrenaline - I have not seen any of their cage work in person for sports car stuff specifically, but I did take a good look at a well modified turbo drag Honda they did, and as far as I could tell, the fab work and welding looked fine.  They are certainly on my list to consider for caging my next E36.  That Rick guy seems to know what he's talking about, and will certainly use any pics/info you provide toward your end goal.

Hope it helps,

Jon

On a related note... I stopped by Adrenaline this afternoon with Chris Cobetto (2-time Spec E30 national roadracing champ and NASA-MA regional director.)  We went in the back and checked out two cars they have caged, both drag Hondas.  Then we had a goooooood long talk about NASA/SCCA/etc rollcage design and rules.

Long story short I think your Lemons car will be in good hands.

I'm an ass:  I've been so sucked into work that I haven't had time to call.  But haven't the last two days been International Interplanetary Holidays?
