I am going to try and get the car to my house today and go get a bunch of parts.  Anyone who wants to come work on it can come over Tuesday after 10am.  Call or PM me for directions or an address.

Yeah, I came and got it and it did have a flat, so thanks for leaving the compressor in the seat.  David and I stripped most of the interior today, only the dash is still in.  I also replaced a couple of vacuum lines and the car appears to idle much more consistently when it is cold.

Thanks, even better news is that it is now much easier to start cold with the correct vacuum lines connected.  David will know what I am talking about next time he sees it.  We got some rough measurements for the cage and will definitely need to get on that pretty quickly.  Besides that there are some electrical connections that need cleaning up and I need to re-do the cooling system.  I will be home on Saturday afternoon and probably flush the coolant a few times if it is over 40 degrees out.

Do you want to have a meeting with everyone interested soon?  We need to figure out who is in and whether or not we will have one or two teams.  If there is going to be a second team they need to get a car going ASAP.

I can do Saturday, but not Sunday. I fall goes as planned I will be delivering the Crossle to the new owner on Sunday. Will be back Tuesday. The weekend after New Years I can do Saturday morning (have to finish by 11:30) or Sunday.

Justin, glad the vacuum lines fixed the idling issue. We knew the vacuum was not right, but couldn't easily see what the correct configuration was. We also need to replace the valve cover gasket.

Vehicle update:

  • New radiator and oil cooler are on along with a new thermostat, hoses and belts
  • I stripped all of the underhood AC stuff out
  • I also changed the oil and shook down the suspension, the front end feels pretty solid
  • I left the original fan on there for now and it seems to be running alright
  • I kept the old hoses and extra oil cooler hose for spares

Anyways, the car starts up very easily now and idles well, even when it is cold.  I will do some research on what needs to come off to replace the valve cover gasket.  At first glance it looks like the whole timing cover may need to come off as well, but I didn't look at it that long.

Tony, do you know when the timing belt was last done?

Edit: I had to put the AC compressor back in because the alternator belt runs off of it.  I though I could just bypass it, but the Jettas with AC have a different alternator pulley which can only be run from the compressor.  If we can find an alternator pulley from a non-AC Jetta we can pull the compressor back out which cleans up the engine bay and gets rid of ~20lbs.  I snooped around Chesterfield Auto Parts, but couldn't find one.  I did pick up a set of dual fans off an old Audi though.  We will need to figure out how to mount them, but they are the right size for the Jetta radiator.

David

Thanks, David.  I am working Monday through Wednesday, so I will probably not do too much on the Jetta.  There is some small stuff to be done here and there (fuel filter, gearbox oil, re-route some of the new vacuum lines, figure out how to run brake cooling ducts) which I will do as I get time.  If anyone wants to work on the car or even just drive it around to get a feel for it, they are more than welcome to come over anytime Thursday-Sunday.  I will probably be busy cleaning up from Christmas and doing some work on my Civic which I have been putting off, but I can help out when needed.

Scott, any word on a meeting?

Let's choose a date and see what everyone says. Should we try for the weekend of the 10th and 11th? Nice work on getting the car running well.

BTW - I hope you guys are saving the receipts. I will work up a spreadsheet and make everything all legit.

Oh, I've got a bunch of receipts Smiley  The weekend of the 10th and 11th works for me.  I have no plans so far so any time would be fine.

ditto so far for me on the 10 and or 11th.

No clue on the timing belt as in when it was done.

Also I would take Justin advise and to drop by to get a feel for the Tranny on the Jetta. If you never driven and old VW First gear is a PITA to find.

I do have plans this weekend to look at a barn find that i got wind of. For a project in Autox or maybe a Dark horse for later Lemons events.

What is it you may ask. well untill i get a good look at it. I dont want to say cause i may not get it if its not as advertised to me. What i will say is that it was built in the 70's , Its small, May have a Very BIG V8(as suggested by owner), Currently setup for Drag racing(again this is from how the owner was describing whats on and whats not on the car) with a name when said to a person. That person gives you a funny look and states A WHAT?!?!?

oh and yeah the owner is willing to give it to me for free just to get it out of his barn.

David

I 'd like to shoot for Sunday the 11th. Maybe around 1:00? What location would work best for everyone? Do we have a list fo everyone's phone numbers? I can call Ben and Scott. I figure we will get everyone we can together, go over our plan, decide on a down payment and when it is due. We should hopefully be able to determine at the meeting whether a second team is necessary. Please post here if you can make it, so we know who is still in.

Should we just choose a good lunch spot and have lunch and meeting to follow? I'm up for most anything.

I also sent a Facebook event reminder to everyone.

Casa Grande in Short Pump. They are good about accommodating groups.
